He is also the father of the illegitimate Caroline Vernon, whose mother is Percy’s former mistress, Louisa Vernon.

Duke of Wellington – Based on the historical Duke of Wellington, he is Charlotte Brontë’s chief man in The Young Men’s Play. Glass Town wasn’t originally a classic work in the way the famous Wuthering Heights by Charlotte’s sister Emily or The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by sister Anne was. Although seemingly killed at the Battle of Velino, he appears to be resurrected by S’death in an early example of literary retcon.I also loved that the characters Greenberg chose to focus on (Zamorna, Mary Percy, Northangerland, Zenobia, Quashia) get their own introductions.

I found this particularly magical – it is a look at the power of the creative process, and how Charlotte in particular as a youth, and Emily in adulthood, became obsessed by the worlds and people they created. This was an era when Britain was a global empire, one which was built on expansion and conquests, with little regard for native inhabitants.

It shows the four kingdoms run by the siblings: Wellington’s Land, Parry’s Land, Ross’s Land and Sneaky’s Land. We also see the catalyst for this early creativity – the present of twelve toy soldiers that Patrick Brontë made to Branwell Brontë in July 1826, and which he then shared with his sisters. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Written in dozens of miniature books, these manuscripts – with curious, secretive titles such as A Peep into a Picture Book, The Spell, A Leaf from an Unopened Volume – are not only an astonishing example of craftsmanship, but contain extraordinary, uncensored content". General Thornton – Thornton originates as the second son of the King of Sneachiesland and brother to the Duke of Fidena, Princess Edith Sneaky, and Princess Maria Sneaky who is disowned by his family due to his wild youth. In this manuscript, "Branwell drew a map of the Glass Town Federation complete with mountain ranges, rivers and trade routes. An exquisitely crafted weaving of the real and imagined lives of the Brontës, Greenberg digs deep into Brontë juvenilia to fully submerge the reader in the chaotic and confusing world of Glass Town. After Percy fails to execute Zamorna during a period of civil war she leaves him, becoming the mistress of Lord Macara Lofty, as is evident from Stancliffe’s Hotel (1838).The experience of this made-up world is so real, it brings us closer to the family themselves, and you feel like you understand what it was to be a Bronte sibling - gifted, isolated, tragic, and loved.
