The story of Paddy began when the North Mall Distillery first began producing whiskey in County Cork in the south of Ireland in 1779. It was later acquired in a merger to become part of the Cork Distilleries Company and produced various products, including the Map of Ireland brand of whiskey. The distillery was merged with three other entities to create the Cork Distillers Company in 1867. Redbreast finds itself high on our list of the top five most expensive Irish whiskies. 4. Midleton – a fancy drink Credit: commons.wikimedia.org The most common cask type used in most international whiskey — including Canadian, scotch and Irish — is used bourbon barrels. These are inexpensive on the secondary market due to the requirement that American bourbon and Tennessee whiskeys be matured new oak barrels. Often, products are aged in bourbon or Tennessee barrels, and then moved to a rare container like first-fill sherry casks for secondary maturation. Midleton is a premium brand and one of the most expensive Irish whiskies whose taste lives up to its distinguished name. In 2020, Paddy's was named the Best Blended Irish Whiskey at the International Whiskey Competition. The whiskey also earned a silver medal and second place for Best Irish Whiskey at the event. It’s the same award winning, soft and mellow, distinctive blend of Pot Still, Malt and Grain Irish Whiskey. When drinking Connemara Peated Single Malt, you will initially first taste the peat before you get the taste of the lingering malt. When not exploring Ireland and finding out its secrets, Conor can usually be found working on his own supernatural novel series. Irish Distillers completes sale of Paddy Irish Whiskey to US company". Paddy is another example of a whiskey that is well-known in Ireland, but uncommon just about anywhere else. Just as with Powers, whenever I enter an Irish pub and see a bottle of Paddy Old Irish Whiskey on the shelf, I know I’m in a place that takes its Irishness more seriously than as just a matter of decor and having a Guinness tap. While peat whiskeys are an acquired taste, if Connemara Peated Single Malt is to your liking, it can make for a well-balanced and smooth Irish whiskey. 6. Bushmills Original – from the oldest licensed distillery in the world Credit: commons.wikimedia.org Admittedly, not the most complex Whiskey in the world, but then, not intended to be either. If it can be had for a reasonable price in your location, then it certainly deserves a spot in your cabinet. For me, it is the Irish analogue of Seagrams 7. It is drinkable on its own or however you might serve it. It makes a fine whiskey drink (try it in an old fashioned) and isn’t likely to offend with coke, ginger ale or seven-up. Blade & Bow Helps With Placing Swank In Your Bourbon And Ponies - Tasty Bites Journey on A Bourbon Traveler’s Race Season GuidePaddy, which claims to be the best-selling whiskey in Ireland, has only recently received wider distribution to the rest of the world in an effort to compete with giants Jameson and Powers, also made at the Midleton distillery. Formerly a Pernod-Ricard brand, Paddy was sold to Sazerac (makers of Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Pappy) in 2016. The whiskey itself, a “high-malt” blend of all three styles of Irish whiskey (malt whiskey, single pot still, and column grain whiskey) is triple-distilled, aged between 4 and 7 years, and bottled at 40% ABV. McGuire, E.B. (1973). Irish Whiskey: A history of Distilling, the Spirit Trade, and Excise Controls in Ireland. Dublin: Gill and Macmillan. pp.375–381. ISBN 0064947017. Pot still whiskey is a style of whiskey native to Ireland produced from a combination of malted and unmalted barley grain, with each type of grain consisting of at least 30 percent of the total mash bill. I’ve always felt that Paddy’s bottling makes the whiskey look like a cheaper product than it actually is, because the labeling style is outmoded without looking old fashioned. Don’t let that deceive you, however, since Paddy Old Irish Whiskey is thoroughly middle of the road stuff. The whiskey has a pale straw-gold coloring, and is bottled at 40 % alcohol. The whiskey is aged for up to seven years, although it comes with no aging statement. I was admittedly somewhat surprised when Paddy’s popped up in the US. I was gifted a bottle of this whiskey from a friend upon return from Ireland almost 20 years ago, and to be honest, I didn’t think it was worth the trip.
