Containing seven short horror stories titled 'A School Story,' 'The Rose Garden,' 'The Tractate Middoth,' 'Casting the Runes,' 'The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral,' 'Martin's Close,' and 'Mr Humphreys and His Inheritance. There is always mention of witchcraft or the occult early on to pique the interest, this is then investigated in libraries or via local hearsay, before something unnatural arrives. Ownership inscription of Frank Leslie Nightingale (1881-1915) and newspaper clipping from The Daily Telegraph, dated 12 March 1956 in manuscript, on front free endpaper; undated newspaper obituary for James loosely inserted, once attached to front pastedown with consequent skinning and glue residue. Spine and board edges browned, ink splashes to foot of rear board, inner hinges starting, book block remaining firm, scattered foxing to contents, tide mark to fore edge of front free endpaper, a very good copy. If she hadn't mentioned James, I would have carried on for at least another decade without knowing anything about him.Often the stories revolve around an ancient artifact able to invoke the otherworldly that is discovered by these particularly luckless individuals (though they often feel themselves lucky indeed when they first make their discoveries). The mystery of their manifestations is part of their appeal to James and he assumes a similar understanding in his reader. Every year at Halloween we like to switch things up and publish something a little bit off our usual beaten track and hopefully introduce you to something new. I had been wondering if, in time, the admirable team at Naxos AudioBooks would tackle Dr James’s disturbing tales… and now, with great pleasure, I welcome this recording of his first collection, Ghost Stories of an Antiquary.

The light is admirably managed, it seems to me, and the figure, though it’s rather too grotesque, is somehow very impressive. Although he seals up the treasure again in its hiding-place, the reader is left asking, will he be safe? Or has he released some force that can’t be contained, as in Count Magnus where Mr Wraxall is literally hunted and haunted to death. They have written established characters such as Doctor Who (The Whispering Gallery, 2008 with Ben Templesmith) and Sherlock Holmes (The Trial of Sherlock Holmes, 2009 with Aaron Campbell, and The Liverpool Demon, 2012 with Matt Triano), as well as creating their own including Brit-Cit Psi Division, Judge Lillian Storm (Storm Warning, 2015 with Tom Foster).James McBryde had originally intended to supply more illustrations for the work, but unfortunately died prematurely before he could complete them. Titles and decoration on both the spine and cover remain bright, but cloth shows moderate discoloration and small rubbed areas.

Sus introducciones tienden a ser algo tediosas, y no es exactamente fácil de leer, pero es un verdadero maestro de lo escalofriante. His fiction has been published in anthologies from Combustion Books, Ghostwoods Books, PS Publishing, Snowbooks, Swan River Press, and Vagrants Among Ruins.

At once true to their source and powerfully reimagined for a visual medium, Leah Moore and John Reppion's subtly crafted adaptations give a new lease of life to these classic stories of vanishing children, spectral works of art and vengeance from beyond the grave. Renowned for their wit, erudition and suspense, these stories are each masterfully constructed and represent a high achievement in the ghost genre. An uncommon first edition, first issue, with the sixteen pages of publisher's adverts dated November 1904.

I covered yards of paper to put in the moon shadows correctly and it is certainly the best thing I have ever drawn". James climbs inside his reader’s skull and caresses the psyche in an extremely subtle way, which, if you will allow him, involves you in the creation of the story. Cloaks, hoods, talons, tentacles, incredibly hairy faces, the foul smell of evil – all pervade his stories, creating, as the story proceeds, a cumulative horror that makes them the best of the genre. R. James’s stories explore the darkness just beyond the flicker of an open fire, and behind a creaking door. R. James’s stories explore the darkness just beyond the flicker of the candle, behind the creaking door. They take place in the quiet corners of churches, and between the dusty shelves of esteemed college libraries. Ghost-Stories of an Antiquary was accordingly published with just the four completed works as a tribute to McBryde. The next best thing, I suppose, is a recording, to be enjoyed in the comfort of our own homes, and it’s a little startling to realise how recently recorded readings became available. Both David Timson and Stephen Critchlow are superb vocal actors, with very pleasing voices, the voices of men you could sit and chat with over a pint of beer or a glass of port. The ideal situation, of listening to Mr Provost himself, is, of course, impossible today, but we are remarkably fortunate, thanks to Robert Lloyd Parry, in having the chance to experience some of the stories in circumstances not wholly dissimilar to those of Dr James’s first audiences.
