David appears on video playing "Solid Rock" and "Les Boys" live in concert, but these performances preceded the recording. Considered by many fans to be the group's most complete album, the 1980 set witnesses leader Mark Knopfler greatly expanding his songwriting palette and setting his storytelling amidst more complex, involving arrangements. Iovine had also worked on Springsteen's Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town albums, and he was instrumental in recruiting E-Street Band keyboardist Roy Bittan for the Making Movies sessions.

I've compared all of these vinyl releases with clean copies and I can definitely say the Mofi beats them all. The songs spark with a mélange of poetry, passion, and cohesion that engages the senses and begs to be experienced again and again.Mastered from analog tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 45RPM 2LP set of Making Movies breathes with reference-caliber airiness, spaciousness, dynamics, and separation. The three awesome songs are all on side one, the best of which is "Romeo and Juliet" (one of the rare songs that I used to listen to and get watery-eyed after the first chorus) although "Tunnel of Love" is pretty perfect too. The extra-wide 45RPM grooves on this edition provide previously unattainable detail, information, and soundstaging.

The album's power isn't lost on Iovine, who later told Rolling Stone: "The right people were in the room together. Vote up content that is on-topic, within the rules/guidelines, and will likely stay relevant long-term. However, I just picked one of these up used from the LRS in new condition, ultrasonic cleaned it in a double cycle, played it and was very happy with the purchase.Thankfully even though they’re too long the songs on here are much more memorable than Brothers In Arms, still kinda boring though at the beginning. Skateaway" is another brilliant song, the only song on which Knopfler really shows us what a great guitar player he is. The song “Skateaway” has an interesting backing rhythm and actually contains the title words of the album ‘Making movies’.

After owning several early Canadian copies and one UK copy, this one has more dynamic and energy, with perfect tonal balance and extension on both end. David Knopfler left Dire Straits in August 1980 during the recording of the album, following heated arguments with his brother [4] and almost immediately after the recording of a BBC2 Arena documentary about the group featuring several individual interviews with the band members. That 2023 release I have also suffers a slightly noisy sound floor so I suppose it’s a good comparison of the two mixes of that song. However, this Mofi does an unbelievable job of separating the instruments to let them all breathe and give them space.Mark Knopfler's songwriting took a significant leap on "Making Movies" as if it were time to try more innovative techniques following two albums. This is another story song, but of a hot young girl that skates around the city listening and bobbing to music on her headphones engrossed in the fantasies of the songs and oblivious to the world. Produced by Jimmy Iovine and Knopfler, the record – which contains many Springsteen-esque elements – features the cleanliness and clarity that have long been Dire Straits trademarks. Making Movies is the record on which Mark Knopfler comes out from behind his influences and Dire Straits come out from behind Mark Knopfler. Side two of the vinyl disc is a bit of a letdown following three strong tracks but the instrumentation does make up for that shortcoming.

The album was remastered and reissued on CD with the rest of the Dire Straits catalogue in 1996 internationally, and on 19 September 2000 in the United States.Group Has Sold More Than 2 Mil Disks - Dutch Delight In Dire Straits - Dutch Delight in Dire Straits" (PDF). Expansive and cinematic, the aptly titled Making Movies puts a premium on interrelated subjects (love, relationships, heartbreak) and deep-seated emotions that play out in heartfelt lyrics, intense singing, and epic frameworks. Three of the seven tracks from Making Movies continued to be played throughout the Love over Gold, Brothers in Arms and On Every Street tours: “Romeo and Juliet”, “Tunnel of Love” and “Solid Rock”, while “ Expresso Love” was played in all concert tours until 1986. You know you're in the presence of sonic greatness as soon as the first few seconds of the opening "Tunnel of Love" pass, as the introductory passage built on organ and piano – new additions to Dire Straits' palette – intertwine with the unmistakable coil-spring twang of Knopfler's guitar. Four songs were recorded during the sessions but not released on the album: "Making Movies," "Suicide Towers," " Twisting by the Pool" and "Sucker for Punishment.
