The Beat Generation was born out of WWII, and it still continues to exert considerable influence on today’s literary scene. Kein "Lexikon", auch wenn der Titel dies andeutet, sondern eher eine Sammlung kleiner Essays zum Thema "Leben und Werke der Brontes".To celebrate the bicentenary of Charlotte Bronte's birth, eminent Victorian scholar John Sutherland takes us on an A to Z ramble through the world of Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte (and not forgetting their dissolute brother Branwell). This short book by a authority in the field, is an accurate, witty, enthralling addition to the ever growing industry of Brontë literacy criticism. All in all I enjoyed this book immensely and could not put it down which is unusual for me as I usually struggle with nonfiction books and tend to steer clear of them.Sutherland is right up-to-the-minute in his refusal to minimise phenomena like ghosts and hauntings in the Brontës' life and work. Also features 'Jane Eyre abbreviated' by John Crace, author of the Guardian's 'Digested Reads' column - read Charlotte Brontë's masterpiece in five minutes! He is the author of several books including, with John Sutherland, the multi-volume The Incomplete Shakespeare. Bramwell the somewhat forgotten Brontë is mentioned quite a bit in this book which I found interesting as I did not know that much about him. Always thought provoking, he does not stand on an academic high-horse, for example he is not afraid to tell the reader that although when Emily died the manuscript of the second novel she was believed to be writing was not found (it may have been destroyed by Charlotte) you can if you wish still read it, since a psychic has been in lengthy communication with Emily and written it at her dictation! However, this book showed me the good elements, like their love of animals and the little things in life. Decopatch is very easy to do and mainly involves tearing the papers into pieces and sticking them onto the papier mache model.
