Description

Jurassic Park: Danger is a game for up to 5 players, but it works better with 4. The board, even with the clever tile system, is not actually big enough to allow for any real strategy as it is only five tiles across at its widest. The tiles would also make a great randomising element, but the four areas the humans must reach are always in the same place. This means both the dinosaur and human players always know where the other is heading, as you can guess this means fox-guarding can become a real issue. We agree that “Turtling” is a legitimate strategy, but it is also very boring. One player plays as the dinosaurs against the other players, who play as the iconic team of humans fighting for their life. The humans have to enable major centres on the island before getting to the helipad and flying to safety. But, if the T-Rex, Velociraptor, and Dilophosaurus munch three characters, the humans lose! The best board games tell a good story, and traditionally that story has always started over again each time you open the game box. Rob Daviau’s Risk Legacy changed that paradigm when it launched in 2011, adding supplemental rules and an evolving narrative that progressed over the course of more than a dozen playthroughs. Its success created an entire genre of board games, with hits ranging from his own Pandemic Legacy Season 1, to the sterling dungeon crawler Gloomhaven, to the charming, reusable Charterstone. This is the overarching theme of Jurassic World: The Legacy of Isla Nublar. You may have the best of intentions, but you never have all the information - and that can wind up being memorably disastrous. The variation in playable characters is interesting, but we found you basically have to have certain characters to win. For example, most starting actions are finance based, so you are not going to get far without The Director. Placing & capturing dinosaurs is much, much easier if you bring The Ranger. Even the Mascot, chief entertainment manager, is arguably a critical role.

So what about the gameplay? Fans have been wondering what it will be like since the project was announced in September. The dinosaurs don't kill anyone, unlike in the movie, they just pin them down until the dinosaur is moved away or an escape card is played.

Let’s say The Director’s character wants to set up a new building in the park for their action. They will need to roll “finance” with a result of 6 or more and because The Director can roll 3 dice for finance, they stand a good chance of succeeding. a b c d e f g h i j k Hall, Charlie (December 7, 2021). Dom’s final thoughts are around the artwork & quality of Jurassic Park: Danger as a product. The puzzle-esque nature is interesting and each tile has its own unique design making for a visually appealing game. The card quality is fine, but the map tiles feel like they will not survive too many playthroughs. Aguilar, Matthew (January 26, 2022). But they could have universal effects, for example building the Food Kiosks could improve everyone’s Finance skills by one point. Also, weirdly, there is a QR code hidden on some of the cards, this is just an advert for other Jurassic World merchandise, only available in “Selected US Retailers”, which is odd for a UK copy of the game and just made me laugh! We would like to start this review by saying both Andy & Dom are huge fans of Jurassic Park (apart from the third one…) and the magic of the original 1993 film holds a special place for both of us. Having said that, we feel “ Jurassic Park: Danger” sadly fails to capture this magic and bring it to the table. The game works on a board made up of tiles that are randomly laid at the start of each game. The facilities are then added at their pre-determined locations and the players start in the centre or the island with the dinosaurs starting in their pens. Jurassic Park: Danger takes place just after Dennis Nedry has shut off all the power, so the game gets right into the action. “That’s One Big Pile of Rules” Can I get an upgrade?” “No,” says the dice. “How about a building?” “Absolutely not.” “Perhaps I can stop this Raptor from eating the guests?” “Think again Mister.” This is compounded by the fact that building and upgrade cards require two consecutive dice rolls to achieve. Cards allow you to move, move faster along the road, escape a dinosaur or cancel another player's card.

As always, we brought a friend along who has never played before to get their opinion on Jurassic Park: Danger. “Good concept, not as great execution” is how Ione summed this game up, and we have to say we agree. Ione really enjoyed how the game has so many characters (almost everyone in the original film is playable) but also felt the game does not always know what to do with them all, making the game feel clunky and awkward at times. Dom's Final Thoughts The game initially features four dinosaurs, and eight additional creatures can be encountered as the game progresses. [1] [8] [9] Dinosaurs are represented as mini figures, while humans take the form of cardboard tabs placed into plastic holders. Gameplay generally revolves around the dinosaurs, such as avoiding carnivores or protecting herbivores. [1] [8] [10] Players can also survey areas, enter buildings to play mini-games, [1] [8] [9] and search for items such as tools and weapons. [8] [11] Jurassic World: The Legacy of Isla Nublar is a legacy board game for two to four players, ages 10 and up. [1] [2] The game follows the plots of the first five Jurassic Park films. [1] It is set on Isla Nublar, the fictional island featured in several films. As in the first Jurassic Park film, the players' goal is to build a dinosaur theme park on the island and achieve a lasting legacy. [3] [4] Gameplay takes place across 12 sessions spanning the events of the five films. [1] Players choose from several playable characters, including Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Sattler, Dr. Ian Malcolm, John Hammond, Dr. Henry Wu, and Robert Muldoon. [1] [5] The game also introduces several original characters and scenarios not seen in the films. [6] [7] a b Ratcliffe, Amy (April 7, 2022). "Jurassic World: The Legacy of Isla Nublar Takes Players on a Fun Dino Romp". Nerdist . Retrieved April 17, 2022. Damage is easy in Jurassic Park: Danger, there are no rolls/saves/dodges, if you are in the same space as a dinosaur, you get injured and the dinosaur player “burns” one random card from your hand, unless the T-Rex uses their special ability and takes two.

Graded Cards

Compare this to other cooperative games like Pandemic or The Forbidden series where players can actively assist one another by aiding in tasks or even completing activities together. Gun to our heads, which do we prefer? The second option is because it feels more engaging but we also enjoyed the fact that your victories in this game are your own without having the share your glory! ACU Rookie – Harry
