Description

We gradually discover the secrets of the past and how things changed for Edwina and her family through the stories that follow of parties that were either directly or indirectly involved. Not completely sure about the structure: it's one complete story but told from three different perspectives. I have not read her other books, and was intrigued to find out how much of her wonderful turn of phrase, was on display here.

Moving by Jenny Eclair – Shiny New Books Moving by Jenny Eclair – Shiny New Books

I had somewhat of a soft spot for poor Edwina, who is gradually beginning to lose her marbles, but couldn't empathise with Fern.Edwina and Ollie had a normal marriage and Edwina’s life seemed to be set fair for the future, until husband Ollie got struck by a ball and died. One: since by the second half of the book we pretty well know where it is headed, I think some of the chapters were overly long. It is only through all of them that we get a complete understanding of who Charlie was, what his story was. Yes, true, there were moments that the novel felt a little flat and too slow, but altogether, the way it was told, the characters, events and surprises defended themselves and "Moving" was intriguing, hooking read. Having got to know Edwina in the first third of the novel, it is a shock to have a different narrator in the following sections – but this only takes a few pages for us to get used to Fern and Lucas, especially once we link Fern with the errant Charlie.

Moving by Jenny Eclair, book review: Comedian reveals her dark

Edwina is an artist and illustrator, her first husband and father to her twins dies very young in a freak accident on a family holiday, I warmed to her as a character looking back over an eventful life where nothing works out as planned and everything has to be taken on and managed as best she can. How strange that she should be the last to go, and for a split-second she can hear them, running up and down the stairs, the tumble and laughter, followed by this silence. Exploring issues associated with 'yuppiedom', politics and the original 'entitled' generation, the story line works well and moves towards a moderately hopeful yet pretty realistic conclusion.Edwina si domanda cosa direbbe il giovane agente immobiliare se lei adesso si girasse e gli dicesse: «Ho vissuto in questa casa con un uomo che è morto all’improvviso su una spiaggia.

One house, one extended family, many stories – AnnaBookBel

Maybe its the fact the book is set predominantly in the eighties, maybe its the graphic descriptions of Fern's sex life and drug taking, I'm not sure. For me, listening to the podcast and thus feeling I know a little something, at least about the author added positively to the reading experience. Lucas - the bitter, jealous and unhappy overweight stepson completes the picture and finally tries to make amends. Not for the faint-hearted though; there are a few moments which will raise eyebrows with the more conservative types. She has lived in the house for over fifty years, watching as it has gone from a bustling family home to a dusty museum of memories.
