Die Laughing: When he finally gets the punchline of the "Wooden leg named Smith" joke, he laughs, and according to his son, he died laughing.

Travers, P.L. (1970–1971), "George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff (1877–1949)", Man, Myth and Magic: Encyclopedia of the Supernatural, London: Purnell , 12 vol.; reprinted in International Gurdjieff Review 3.1 (Fall 1999), In Memoriam: An Introduction to Gurdjieff Still, Mary Poppins, for all of her competency, skill, and magical adventures becomes still more terrifying and cruel in this book. The arrogance and self-satisfaction are dialed up to eleven in this book, with the poor little kids having to wait in the cold while Mary Poppins admires her own beauty and neatness in the shop mirror. Also dialed up to 11: Mary Poppins ability to say cruel things to her charges. Travers frequently attaches the word “jeering” to the remarks aimed at the children, and they are often quite cruel indeed. And that’s before we consider that Mary Poppins constantly accuses the children of lying about the magical adventures she’s taken them on, leaving them too terrified to say a word to anyone except each other. This book only strengthens my conviction that, however marvelous Mary Poppins might be, the Banks children are going to end up completely messed up. And I mean completely, given that Mrs. Brill seems to be the most steady presence in their lives, which is not really saying much.Hate" might be pushing it, but he has no patience for silly female frivolity. He disapproves of his wife's suffragette nonsense, admonishes wife for showing "female emotions" to the children, and outright states in his "I Am" Song that he considers a wife to be an obedient subject of a man's domain just like his house, servants, and children.

Constable Egbert: The local policeman. He is good friends of the Park Keeper, and is secretly in love with Ellen, the Banks' maid. He is a triplet, and his two brothers Herbert and Albert are also policeman, although according to him, they are completely different in personality. In the film his last name is Jones and he is played by Arthur Treacher. He also makes a brief appearance in the stage musical. Albert Wigg: Mary's uncle, presumably her mother's brother; a large round bald man with a jovial personality. If his birthday falls on a Friday, he comes so full of 'laughing gas' that he floats up in the air. He appears in the 1964 film as Uncle Albert, played by Ed Wynn, and sings the song " I Love to Laugh" with Bert. He is absent from the musical. Berserk Button: She already disproves of Mary Poppins's approach to babysitting, but when she learns she's freed her pet lark, Miss Andrew gets pissed.Sour Outside, Sad Inside: As Bert rightly guesses, Mr Banks is cold toward his children because he works in a cold, uncaring job where the appearance of strength and "respectability" are paramount, so he feels he can't share his troubles with them. Mrs Banks is married to George Banks and is the mother of Jane, Michael, John, Barbara, and Annabel Banks. Her first name is never revealed in the books, but was given as Winifred in the film and the stage musical. In the books, she is the struggling mistress of the Banks household, and is easily intimidated by Mary Poppins, who treats her with thinly veiled contempt. In the film, she is a strident suffragette (in public; at home, she is the typical Edwardian wife) who is treated somewhat satirically. She was made into a suffragette in the film to explain why she sometimes did not have time to look after her children. In the stage musical, she is a former actress who is under constant pressure from her husband as she struggles to enter his social circle. In the 1964 Disney film, she is portrayed by Glynis Johns; in the 2004 Radio 4 drama, she is played by Deborah Berlin.
