A horror fan from the time he first saw Poltergeist on HBO as a child, Chris shares his West Virginia home with his fiancé, a pug, and two chihuahuas, none of whom share his love of all things horror.

A 1977 newspaper article in the Desert Sun titled “ A Busy Ghost Haunts This Small, Virginal Church” describes the haunting. Taking a close look, the figure seemed to be ghostly in appearance and had the looks of a woodsy outdoorsman type with something that appeared to be fishing gear.

Later, Jackson supposedly said he would “rather fight the British at New Orleans than fight the Bell Witch. I think the idea that the Mothman was formed in some sort of military experiment gone wrong justfeels more like the killer clown scares in 2017; it’s just the result of mass hysteria. It was definitely carnivorous, and true to form of the rest of its unnatural look many of the teeth didn't seem to be arranged in a natural way in its mouth. Large, ape-like, and furry, this cryptid has been the subject of mysterious photos, internet debates and legends in the heart of the Appalachian mountain range. The shadows and rustles of forests are natural fodder for fear, especially if you’re not used to them, but among those who know, the Appalachians are another beast entirely.

Most parts of the trail are desolate, and remote, cutting through mountains and thick forests which have brought about some chilly encounters for the hikers. The Spearfinger lurks around the highest peaks of the Smokey Mountains as she keeps a special eye on children who have wandered away from their homes and parents. Following the initial sighting, there were multiple other sightings reported across multiple different sources in the Point Pleasant area. What could be more exciting than happening upon a carnivorous round-leaved sundew, with its red tentacles glistening with glue-like nectar? I have NEVER faced any kind of anxiety in my life, but at that moment something felt off and there was no way I could put my finger on what it was.

A few months ago Appalachia was trending on Twitter; someone was explaining what makes the mountain range unique, diving into some of the geographical data on the Appalachians, trying to conceptualize just how fucking old this spine is. I jammed my old truck in first gear and roasted tires all the way through first, snatched second gear and drove as fast as I could home. Far from being simply Southern Gothic with a mountainous locale, Appalachian Gothic takes a much weirder bent–the traditions are older, the presence of God is a little more sinister (and might be covering for some weird eldritch deity–check out Old Gods of Appalachiafor more on that ), and there’s a cool, methodical, eerie atmosphere to the stories told in these mountains.

As the legend goes, exactly 50 years later (to the day), a woman waited alongside a road parallel to the Bostian Bridge due to car troubles. UFO sightings increased significantly, and suspicious men in black were spotted throughout the hills surrounding the town. Many people grew up hearing superstitions, such as black cats and walking under ladders bringing bad luck, and stories of humanoid creatures without knowing their fascinating origins. However, there have been several scary stories and urban legends based around the Appalachian Mountain Trail with some being real and others just some stories. A father living out in the wild with his daughter knows trouble is ahead when he starts finding dead bodies on his farm.

Dudley town has a very weird nickname, the village of the damned which is believed to have been cursed a long time ago.

Then, the continents decided to change direction, sending them slamming into and over top of each other, bringing earthquakes and molten rock eruptions in their wake. Its long history involving Native American tribes and settlers have led to the region’s unique culture and supernatural folklore that subtly influence many Americans to this day. The fearsome, gigantic creature resembling a human-sized moth with blood red eyes drew the attention of not only people in West Virginia – where the story originated from – but also Hollywood executives who made famous films and television shows about it. They were a 24-hour truck stop and always had lights on but I didn't think about it again after noticing, I just chalked it up to the power being out but I could not shake the feeling that something was definitely askew. The Appalachian Mountain Trail passes through several locations with some of these places being inhabited while others are deserted.
