Description

Made from Aluminium Alloy, the Big Dog screw in peg is 35cm long, and has a left aggressive thread, which allows the peg to secure awnings etc. Like the others, this comes with its own robust and durable storage box and there is even a peg cleaner incorporated into the lid’s design.

I have this type bought from Aldi a while back so not a major outlay, but a total waste of money in my view.I also managed to drive the Dmax over one of them, and bent it pretty badly, but otherwise they are going well! If you drive tent pegs into the ground at a 45-degree angle towards your tent, it’ll help to create more grip and overall strength.

I started with a lump hammer and found that it was hard on the wrist and so changed to using a steel shafted claw hammer. We have a variety of different pegs including steel and plastic for use in both hard ground and sand. To find the best peg for each ground type, you’re best studying the table with regard to the kilogram ratings.Hex Pegs are a 285mm-long steel screw-in peg featuring stainless-steel washer, rubber grommet, a clever rope retaining hook top, and a 15mm head. The prospect of being able to screw the pegs in is very attractive, but it's just a question of finding the right ones. Initially, I planned on using my RUNVA 11,000-pound winch (almost five-tonnes), plus a 1000kg crane scale, 1000kg rated closed eyebolts, chain, rated bow shackles, a giant protractor to measure and set pull angles, along with some mathematical know-how allowing me to transform a horizontal winch line pull into two separate calculated angled pulls on each peg. With so many camp sites being converted to crushed limestone or gravel, this problem is only getting more and more common. We’ve chosen some common size steel pegs at 200mm and 300mm long, a heavy-duty angle iron type peg at 450mm long and a 300mm long plastic peg – all from my own stash.

The first pull was set to be pulling the peg out of the ground at a 45° angle, replicating use on a tarp, awning or tent – in effect, trying to bend the peg as well as pulling it free from the ground, and that’s a no-no for some of these pegs. Although the Screw In Peg performed faultlessly in harder soils, the performance in anything softer is not much different to a standard peg. The Caravan Supermarket has 35 years experience in the caravan and camping industry and is based in Birmingham.I reckon the Hex Peg is a ripper design, although you could stub your toe on the rope hook that stands proud of the ground even when the peg is driven fully into the earth. Over the years, camping has become so much easier, and more comfortable, and little inventions like this go a long way to making this happen. These pegs can be used with the following adaptors: Manual Drive In Adaptor or Cordless/Electric Drill Adaptor.

Some tents don’t have the ability to hook it over, so you may need to run the screw down in the centre of the loop, being careful that it doesn’t grab the fabric and start to twist it around!

The pegs are brightly coloured for good visibility, the peg itself is orange and the clip is yellow. Many years ago we were setting up a tent in a caravan park and bending pegs due to the hard ground, finally found a soft spot only for the peg to go straight into a poly water pipe less than 8 inches deep. So, if you spend a lot of time caravanning and staying at caravan sites with hard standing pitches, you need to invest in at least one of the great packs of steel awning pegs above.
