The plans – amazing in their thoroughness, charting a series of singles, EPs and albums including sleeve art, a touring schedule and even plans for photo shoots – were convincing enough to persuade Noise to transfer the deal to the new project, which was fine apart from the fact that the label wanted to test the water by releasing a mini-album first, something that wasn’t part of the new Celtic Frost gameplan.

This decade-long process was, among many other things, one of deracination – almost certainly an unconscious move on the part of its main players, as by the early 80s, most young white metal musicians, when they rejected the blues as an influence, were rejecting music made by white musicians, who had in turn been influenced by white musicians, who had originally been influenced by Black musicians. Replete with iconic cover art by HR Giger, “To Mega Therion” imposes its dark majesty from the off with the orchestral bombast of “Innocence And Wrath”, before launching into the savagery of the hook-laden “The Usurper”. With your other band Triumph of Death, a tribute to Hellhammer, are there any upcoming dates for this band?

A cover of Wall Of Voodoo’s ‘Mexican Radio’ is such an odd opening track for their next LP Into The Pandemonium (1987), and is perhaps the first clear signal that there is more than some dissatisfaction with the ‘restrictiveness’ of extreme metal. It, and CELTIC FROST‘s previous releases, increasingly received critical acclaim, which emboldened the band to take more risks, to push the boundaries of heavy music even further with their next album. They have all the rights, but as usual with BMG they contacted me and they said do you want to be involved, we would love to have you on board.

If the band’s manifesto was to embark upon an experimental charge into unoccupied space, then having to act quickly, probably upset that impulse somewhat while giving them a ragged edge and Morbid Tales is probably best seen as a rollicking great proto-death thrasher with some tastes of what’s yet to come. The reason why we played Hellhammer music in Celtic Frost at the time was because we had just formed the band and there wasn’t enough material to fill a full rehearsal. Whether this was the fuel that propelled Celtic Frost or not (other potential power sources include an obvious emerging zeitgeist, geographical isolation from nearly all other metal groups and Fischer’s weird and unpleasant childhood), in three short years they would come to represent the best of the spirit of innovation in heavy metal during the mid-80s.

Featuring the first recording of the essential "Circle Of The Tyrants", the EP is a solid snapshot of the sheer fanaticism that was the lifeblood of Tom and Martin in particular. There’s no denying the Black Sabbath influence (but, hell, what band wasn’t influenced by the Black Country’s favourite sons?

It covers their Noise Records output from 1984’s ‘Morbid Tales’ to 1987’s ‘Into The Pandemonium’, charting an unpredictable course that saw them take in radical stylistic changes from avant-garde extreme metal to thrash metal and doom metal. The last disc, Grave Hill Bunker Rehearsals, features 4 tracks recorded in 1984, demos that show work in progress. And I submitted a list of titles that I thought would be appropriate, and I really was also curious to hear what they had to say from outside of the band. Arguably despite being a little off the wall in places, Into The Pandemonium still manages to be very accessible, especially for fans of older rock and roll. One of the reasons Celtic Frost came out of the traps so hard in 1984 was that Thomas Fischer and Martin Ain had already been part of a band where intent and passion far outstripped ability in the form of Hellhammer, a group hated so much by the international metal press that the aspirations of its main members were nearly crushed into inertia. I was contacted by BMG about this box set almost a year ago, and the very first thing we worked on was the actual vinyl because of the backlog at pressing plants. Danse Macabre" captures the radical ambition and evolution of CELTIC FROST from 1984 through to 1987. Daring, dark and superlatively heavy, "To Mega Therion" is a sophisticated expression of CELTIC FROST's inherent drive to eschew genre limitations and, instead, define art on their own terms. Black and Death metal with occasional hints of doom and ambient and strong lyrics too, an intelligent and professional touch that put Celtic Frost above many at the time.
