Description

Percentage luminance drop at 20 degree vertical angle from the centre of the screen with 50% white output MPEG1: MPEG1/MPEG2PS: MPEG2/MPEG2TS (HDV, AVCHD): MPEG2, AVC/MP4 (XAVC S): AVC, MPEG4, HEVC/AVI: Xvid, MotionJpeg/ASF (WMV): VC1/MOV: AVC, MPEG4, MotionJpeg/MKV: Xvid, AVC, MPEG4, VP8. HEVC/WEBM: VP8/3GPP: MPEG4, AVC/MP3/ASF (WMA)/LPCM/WAV/MP4AAC/FLAC/JPEG; WEBM: VP9/AC4/ogg/AAC/ARW (Screen nail only) The Sony X80J has sub-par HDR brightness. It's slightly brighter than in SDR but not bright enough to make highlights pop. The EOTF follows the target fairly well, though, which means that the overall brightness of scenes is pretty accurate overall. Dark scenes are over-brightened a bit, and bright scenes are limited by the low peak brightness. The EOTF rolls off sharply near the TV's peak brightness, which causes a loss of fine details in bright scenes. As with SDR, the frame dimming causes darker scenes with small highlights to be more dim overall. We tried to reproduce a frame skipping bug that some users have reported when watching 23.976fps content. To get a capable Sony TV below 50 inches this year, you can opt for the A9S, which is still on sale and will offer a step up in picture quality over the average LCD. Otherwise, though, Sony's LCDs will offer far more flexibility in the lower end of screen sizes.

Approximate diagonal size of the display. If the manufacturer does not provide such information, the diagonal is calculated from the width and height of the screen.

We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for two months in our Accelerated Longevity Test. Information about the maximum horizontal viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality. They provide 18-, 24-, and 30-bit color, respectively. We tested the 55 inch Sony X80J (KD-55X80J), which is also available in 43, 50, 65, and 75 inch sizes. For the most part, we expect our results to be valid for those sizes, except for the 50 inch, which uses a different panel. There are also variants of the 55, 65, and 75 inch models with the model code X80CJ. That version appears to be the Costco and Sam's Club model, which should perform the same, except it comes with Sony's new Bravia CORE streaming service, which can stream movies at up to 80 Mbps, according to Sony. In Europe, you'll see the X80J sold alongside the X81J, but as far as we know, the two have the same specs. In Italy, it's called the X80JP. Size We tested the 55 inch Sony X85JTV (XB55X85J), and it's also available in a 43inch, 50 inch, 65 inch, 75 inch, and 85inch size. We expect our results to be valid for the other sizes as well, but we've seen some reports that the 43 inch model has an IPS-type panel in some regions, so we expect those variants tohave worse contrast but better viewing angles. As Sony doesn't provide any panel information, if you have any information on the panel types for the other sizes, let us know in the discussions below. If you come across a Sony X80J with a different panel type or that doesn't correspond to our review, let us know in the discussions, and we'll update the review. Some tests, like gray uniformity, can vary between individual units. OLED TVs are undergoing something of a sizing transformation, with the introduction of last year's 48-inch OLED panel size, this year's 83-inch alternative, and a confirmed 42-inch option likely to come to different TV brands in the coming year.

The VRR support works without issue on the Xbox Series X and reduces screen tearing. Sadly, it doesn't support FreeSync at all, as there's screen tearing with the AMD RX 580 and RX 6600 XT graphics cards, and because the Xbox Series X supports both HDMI Forum VRR and FreeSync, it's confirmed that it has native HDMI Forum VRR support.
