My piggies discovered the puppy pee pad underneath all the hay so they dragged the puppy pee pad and set it on top of the hay. This tray has a perforated grate that allows pee to flow down to the pads underneath, while the high sides prevent spatter. These puppy pads have a liquid-to-gel core, odour control technology, and a built-in attractant to encourage your pup to hit the right spot.

Whether you call them potty pads, puppy pads, training pads, or pee pads, these absorbent sheets have become an invaluable part of the puppy training process. Effective potty training relies on teaching your dog consistent habits. The right puppy pad not only enables positive habits during housebreak training but also makes cleanup as simple as throwing out the pad and replacing it with a new one. Most cats prefer to use a litter box and cat litter to go to the bathroom, but puppy pads can work for cats too. For cats that routinely “miss” the box, pee pads are excellent to use under and around the litter box to keep pee off your floor. Puppy pads can also be used in lieu of litter, either in the box, flat on the ground, or in a pee pad holder. Puppy pads may be helpful for cats that start refusing the box and instead pee on rugs, clothing, or towels. Frisco Dog Training & Potty Pads are available in a scented or unscented version along with many of the useful features found among our other recommendations, including the inclusion of a pheromone meant to attract your puppy to the pad. They have a similar dry paper margin and leakproof plastic liner as many of our other favorites. Puppy pads are particularly helpful as they are easy to roll up and dispose of, they should be highly absorbent and save on washing endless towels. Some people use newspapers, but I find that unless you use several sheets, they fall apart when wet and become more of a hindrance to clean up.

Benefits of using puppy pads

HELP NEEDED! Important information regarding conscious dentals, The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary needs your help HERE Each time your puppy wakes up from a nap, has finished eating or playing with you, take them straight to the pad or outside. All dogs love shredding paper and cardboard – it’s part of exploring and growing up. Give them an old cardboard box they can shred or a loo roll inner tube, but make sure you give them it and a yes command, so they start to learn that this is OK to shred and chew. Expecting your puppy to know what to do and to know to pee on a pad is very a common mistake. If they are peeing next to the pad, it’s because they don’t understand. Put down more pads and then be vigilant in watching your dogs indicators for toileting – usually lots of sniffing about and circling. Put them on the pad and reward if you get the desired outcome. You may need to take them to a pad as often as every 45 minutes to begin with. Although house training a puppy can be hard work and tiring - be patient and consistent, and all your efforts should pay off!

Watch for the typical signs that your puppy needs to go to the toilet – these may include sniffing the floor, circling, looking restless or going into a room they have previously toileted in. Take your puppy immediately to your chosen place in the garden and wait patiently until they have done their business and praise gently. What to do if your puppy has an accidentOur top tested choice for Best Charcoal, Bark Charcoal Training Pads, are sold out, but the Activated Charcoal Pee Pads from Bark & Clean have a similar internal layer of activated charcoal to neutralizes odors.

We still found the floor completely dry beneath after letting liquid soak into the pads. Plus, there was no runoff when we lifted the pads and the paper margins stayed dry, so we never had to get our fingers wet. During the initial stages of house training it’s best not to leave your puppy alone - ideally you should wait until house training is well established. If you do have to go out, then leave them in the area that they are most comfortable (see Home alone) making sure your puppy has had the chance to exercise and go to the toilet beforehand. Leave out some paper for your puppy to toilet on (away from their bed area) should they need to go - although this won’t teach your puppy where you would like them to go to the toilet, it will make any mess easier to clean up and stops the area becoming soiled. Toilet training a puppy at night Once you take your puppy home, you’ll have to begin showing them where you’d like them to toilet – usually this will be your garden or if you don’t have one, an outside area very near to your home. Most female dogs squat down to pee so their urine pools underneath their stance, but most male dogs lift one leg to urinate so their urine lands a few inches away. Puppy pads are highly useful for potty training all puppies, but we recommend keeping the designated potty space with the pad away from walls, especially if you have a male puppy, to prevent their pee from landing on unprotected surfaces. This article was written by Andrew Whalen, commerce editor for The Spruce Pets, who joined a group of volunteer testers for direct insight into the usefulness of 20 different puppy pads. Using a rigorous methodology, testers evaluated each puppy pad for effectiveness, smell control, durability, value, and how easy they were to clean up. He has tested hundreds of products in our New York product labs.Give the command “enough, thank you” and then redirect them to one of their favourite puppy toys or play a game with them. I keep doing this consistently until the dog has understood. During our tests in our NY lab and in a real home, we found the Four Paws pads to perform just as well as our other favorites, with the quilted lining ensuring that the floor beneath the pad stays dry, even after multiple cups of liquid have been spilled. The Wee-Wee Gigantic Pads have a generous paper margin, so you won't get your fingers wet, and the extra surface area helped the Wee-Wee soak up 5 cups of liquid without ever feeling waterlogged.

Most puppy training pads have enough powder to absorb between 3 and 5 cups of water. This is significantly more than most puppies pee in a day. While different veterinary sources provide slightly different standards, the expected daily urine output for a dog is typically between 0.4 and 0.85 ounces per pound. This means a 10-pound puppy may pee a little more than a cup a day at most. One thing you need to know about puppies is they pee – a lot! Sometimes 12–14 times in a day. This means that toilet training needs to commence from the moment you bring your puppy home, and learning how to puppy pad train is essential. Routine is key to establishing house training and using puppy pads will be really helpful until the dog can be considered house trained. When you first wake up, last thing at night and very regularly during the day, take your puppy outside to a place in your garden that you have chosen. If you use newspaper or puppy pads overnight, pop some of the soiled paper in this area as the smell will help your puppy to know where to go to the toilet. Let your puppy walk up and down or run about and sniff the area (both exercise and sniffing help stimulate going to the loo). It’s best to let your puppy out in the garden without a lead on as it will be too restrictive, however if your puppy needs to be on lead for whatever reason, an extendable lead is a good solution as this will give them the freedom they need to toilet.
