Perfect as a regular morning munch, a special Sunday treat or as a tasty topping over yoghurt or ice cream. It wasn’t just a whim. “We had chatted in the past about the muesli being good enough to sell,” Luke admits. “Then when I broke my collar bone we thought, ‘right, let’s do it’.” Tim went to St Andrew’s to study English Lit, but dropped out and instead went off to Romania for three years where he joined a charity working with the country’s Gypsy community.

Next thing he knew, he and his trusty bike had parted company and he was on his way to hospital with a broken collar bone. Luke explains: “Tim and I have known each other since we were about 11. We only lived a mile apart. After school I headed off to Exeter University and did a degree in business economics. An intern at the production company found us on Google. At the time I was still working in London but the BBC liked what they saw and the cameras followed us from last spring. Secondly, there is the high quality and quantity of the ingredients. We have gone for a luxury blend, and we don’t compromise on that. The story of how Luke and Tim came to be putting Rosley on the muesli map is stranger still, however. Because also involved in the mix is Romania’s 650,000-strong Gypsy population! But a final decision was put off until last September when Luke decided to return home to make a go of Lakeland Mues. When the wheels came off Luke Christian’s mountain biking exploits, little did he think his life would soon be pedalling in a completely different direction. The pair set to work in their respective mothers’ kitchens mixing up a blend of seeds, nuts and cereals and toasting them with just the right amount of honey to create their own luxurious muesli. Muesli isn’t one of them – and toasted artisan Swedish-style muesli is even more off the wall. Especially since the cereal’s invention, around 1900, is credited to a Swiss nutritional pioneer and physician, Maximilian Bircher-Benner. Things have moved fairly rapidly since the autumn. Lakeland Mues is currently producing two blends: Tropical Medley, with Brazil nuts, peanuts, mango, apricot and banana, and the original Artman Classic, named in honour of Nico, brimming with almonds, cranberries, pumpkin seeds and raisins. Lakeland Mues can now count a string of four- and five-star hotels and top end retailers, from as far away as Northern Ireland and Sussex, amongst its growing list of customers. I think they were all pretty bemused,” he says with a laugh. “A lot of people want to run their own business and it is a risk. But everyone at Deloitte has been very supportive. I’ve been told there is a job there again if I ever need one. By Christmas 2015, with the pair living more than 300 miles apart, it had become obvious that tough decisions would have to be made.Thirdly, it tastes so much better than the supermarket stuff and is healthy. There is just enough honey to tantalize the taste buds and we entrust the sweetness to the fruit.”

Sunday is International Sushi Day: the raw appeal of the Japanese treat and how to try making it yourself A fellow charity worker was a Swede called Niko Artman and he introduced Tim and Luke to toasted muesli. So he and best friend Tim Cottingham did what any go-ahead twentysomethings would do. They decided to launch their own business making toasted artisan muesli. One suspects they will be envious that Luke and Tim have had the initiative and foresight to spot a gap in the market and go for it.
