GemmaSchiebeFineArt II Continuing my artistic education and recording my time throughout my second year as a BA (Hons) Fine Art Student at Cardiff Metropolitan University – “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. He created prints from a large variety of trees, of which the oldest was a fallen 200-year-old chestnut tree once planted by Frederick Law Olmsted.

Bryan Nash Gill was born and raised in the same rural, northwestern corner of Connecticut where he works as an artist today.I am often on the look-out for notecards that don't fall into any of the medium's typical expectations. I visit a few bone yards that are filled with discarded trees, and friend’s occasional point me in the direction of a newly cut tree. Present on the international art scene in private and public collections, he exhibits regularly in numerous galleries in the United States. The prints are beautiful, the paper is a nice weight, they’re large and allow for a lot of writing, there is also a blurb on the back of each card.

When printing with many colors, viscosity, opacity, and translucency are very important and I sometime feel like a mad scientist.

The connection to nature is stronger than if he just drew this image as nature has been used to create it and I definitely feel that when I look at his work. The notecards are well-presented on recycled paper with attractive packaging and I highly recommend them to anyone interested in trees and / or woodcuts. I am experimenting with creating tools using nature to draw and paint with and even though Bryan hasn’t made the tool here, it is still a natural material applying paint to the paper surface. Gill earned his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from Tulane University in 1984 and his Masters of Fine Arts from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland four years later.

Bryan Nash Gill (November 3, 1961 – May 17, 2013) was an American artist who worked primarily with wood, in the form of relief prints and sculptures. These impressions highlight the complexity of the forms, almost mathematical, the fineness of the lines and the texture of the wood that becomes purely graphic. Woodcut will appeal to anybody who appreciates the grandeur and mystery of trees, as well as those who work with wood and marvel at the rich history embedded in its growth. Gill creates patterns not only of great beauty but also year-by-year records of the life and times of fallen or damaged logs. However, I felt that the book itself was too small, and cramped the prints which deserved much more space on the page, and some of the prints lost clarity because of the paper.Redefining the traditional woodcut, Connecticut-based artist Bryan Nash Gill creates exquisitely detailed largescale relief prints of cut trees.
