This was a very well written moment by the author and the way she wrote the scene was very thoughtful and sensitive. So why isn't she ready for Yuu's feelings now that she's sure Yuu really knows who she really is and loves her for real reasons? Bloom into You is a charming love story about two young women who together discover that their dreams of a heart-pounding romance can indeed come true. As always, the technical for this are fabulous, Jenny McKeon’s translation does something specific I don’t want to spoil, but that I really liked in the climactic moment between Touko and Sayaka. Just what changes can someone accept, even if they don't want those changes, but still adore the person? The initial parts of this instalment deal with the fall out from Yuu’s decision and Nanami’s reaction to it and it is an absolute masterclass in storytelling. That’s when Yuu sees the beautiful student council president Nanami turn down a suitor with such maturity and finesse that Yuu is inspired to ask her for advice. But Yuu is so out of her element, having new feelings, trying to express them, only to be turned down, that she can't even see past her own nose. Certainly she is different by degree than Maki, but I don't feel that her depiction completely betrays her status as a potential representation of asexuality/aromanticism either.

But with Yuu confessing to Touko in volume 6, there was a lot of hands thrown up, essentially saying: "Well there you go, she wasn't aromantic/asexual, she just hadn't finished developing her sexual awakening" or "it just took the right person" or "I knew it was too good to be true that we'd get aromantic/asexual representation. And the movie resumes, with Yuu and Touko running across town to see each other and finally have their own moment. It's a huge change for her, and ultimately it will be for the better (no, I am not speaking from personal experience here! Some stories mirror those early “S” stories and use reference to purity as an indication that school is old-fashioned, like Maria Watches Over Us,” or are parodies of “S” like Strawberry Panic! A lot of transgender people find this experience with people who wanted a one time sexual exploration, but aren't really interested in long-term relationships with a transgender person. She tries to say that love isn’t for her, but he says she’s not actually like him and she’s just running away because she doesn’t want to face the rejection.

There is a historical reason why the religious ideal of purity exists in Yuri, and I wrote about it here: http://okazu. The characters need this time to look around how everyone else has changed and how they have changed. I’ve never been terribly invested in Yuu and Touko as a couple, not because I don’t like them, or because they shouldn’t be together, but just because this story was always presented to us as a Yuri romance. There's also the school trip for the 2nd years (Touko and Sayaka) where Sayaka finally confesses to Touko. He's drawing a firm line between his complete lack of ability to feel or want another person and Yuu's experience. Adaption, editing and lettering are all top notch, which means you’ll never notice them, but kudos to Jenn Grunigen, Julie Davis and CK Russell and I’m thrilled to see a proofreader, Danielle King.
