Description

The handle is built to be extremely fine-grained, which means that even while holding it by the handle, the pressure is distributed equally throughout the entire length of the handle. This helps to minimize hand fatigue. The DeWalt DCD778 is a drill machine that is widely recognized for its versatility and durability. It is designed to handle a variety of applications, making it suitable for both professional and DIY use. The drill machine is equipped with a powerful motor that delivers impressive performance, allowing users to complete their tasks efficiently.

The solid reliability of this DeWalt combi drill was evident when it came to driving screws. 70 mm long wood screws went in and out without camming or much pressure needed. The 150 mm screw could have kept going through the timber there was that much torque left over! I wasn’t forced to use the drill mode for driving screws, which was a good sign. All the best combi drills on the market, as far as I’m concerned, run on 18 Volt batteries. So, it’s good that DeWalt have been working on their XR range of tools for years and years. Supplied with a single 1.5 Ah battery, the DCD776 combi drill kit is ideal for DIYers that aren’t going to push this drill to the limit for hours on end. The dcd778 is a 17w slim, lightweight cordless tool. It has a smaller and lighter battery which also means 15 minutes of charge is enough. A 1 AA battery powers it, so you can use it anywhere. Its compact size makes it great for a perfect travel or camping companion; small, lightweight, and handy. Even though the weight of the battery is light, I consider Dcd778 to be a little heavyweight, considering it’s a one-hand tool.

This drill has 15 adjustable torque, this ensures when screwing into delicate materials, you’re tightening with the right amount of torque, so you do not damage the surrounding area. DeWalt’s trigger mechanism is also extremely well judged, offering a brilliant amount of control over drill speed, which is essential if you don’t want to round screws or worse, punch through to the next room when drilling a hole. DeWalt Dcd778 is a powerful drill with 20V of continuous power. It has a battery life of over 30-50 hours; you’ll be sure to at least make it through the whole job without having to wait for the charge to complete. This makes it a little expensive but perfectly worth the money, in my opinion.

Performance-wise, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a DeWalt combi drill with these specs. It did the job comfortably, but it wasn’t going to win any speed records. The brushed motor is a bit on the large size and it’s a tiny bit front-heavy, but the DeWalt DCD776 is a dependable drill that should last for a long time. Weighing in at 1.3 kg without the battery, this is a rather heavy beast. It’s certainly not the lightest of the cordless drills that I have tested, but that’s to be expected in a brushed motor drill. It’s fairly long as well, at just under 230 mm in length without anything in the jaws. It won’t get into the tightest spots compared with some of the smaller cordless drills on my list. It’s also 225 mm tall without a battery installed. Dewalt has done a fantastic job with DCD778. The stand-out feature is the LED light, making it to be used in low to medium light conditions. Just for context I am a casual DIYer so don't need to have 2 x 5.0Ah batteries on standby but in terms of building my collection, having the 5.0ah batteries would be useful if I start getting additional Dewalt bare tools but it's a nice to have, not a deal breaker. I'm happy purchasing corded tools in future if it means I get more power for less money, as opposed to being tied to one brand.

For DIYers, this is an ideal place to start if you want to look the part. Professional tradespeople might expect more features and higher build quality from a combi drill though. There are a few too many plastic parts, a rattle that got on my nerves, and no place to store batteries any bigger than little 1.5 Ah ones. The DeWalt DCD709 is designed to be highly compact and lightweight, making it easy to handle and use. It can be used conveniently in confined spaces and carried easily from one place to another. It also has a robust construction and is capable of handling whatever you throw. Moreover, it sits easily in the tool belt and keeps you free and fatigue-free. The build quality is excellent, and it lasts longer on a single charge thanks to DeWalts 18v XR Lithium-Ion Batteries. It has an ergonomic design with a rubber grip to improve user comfort. LED Light System The only niggle I found were that the LED work light is good but not excellent - there are brighter ones available out there. DeWalt is one of the leading manufacturers of power tools that deliver unparalleled performance with durable construction. You can rely on this brand to handle the toughest applications. The DeWalt XR Li-Ion line of tools is a fast-growing range that offers outstanding runtime, enhanced efficiency, higher flexibility and unbeatable performance. That said, it’s not particularly heavy, even with a bit 5.0Ah battery slapped onto the bottom of it. I’ve tried many other drills that are weightier but that doesn’t take away from the general robustness, as it can definitely stand up to many weeks, months and years of operating in dusty and dirty environments. What irritates me though is where the battery meets the drill. One of the first things to get on my nerves with any battery-powered tool is if the battery rattles about in its holder. There’s far too much play in the battery and I worry if the connection is going to hold up over time. It doesn’t help to make this combi drill feel like a quality power tool. The DeWalt DCD778 features a compact and lightweight design, making it easy to handle and maneuver in tight spaces. It also comes with an ergonomic grip, which enhances comfort and reduces user fatigue during prolonged use. This drill machine is known for its reliability, as it is constructed with high-quality materials that ensure its durability over time. The DeWalt DCD709 combi drill also features a 3-mode light system that illuminates your work area to allow working in dark spaces. The third setting lights up an entire wall to add a lot of visibility to handle the most difficult jobs. This feature is specifically important when working in hard-to-see conditions. It also comes with a magnetic bit holder that holds anything you put onto it. If you would like to learn more about DeWalt drills, see our best DeWalt drills here. Conclusion

The DCD709 combi drill features brushless motor technology to perform better than traditional drills. The 2-speed all-metal transmission provides longer tool life and enhanced runtime. It also offers hammer and drill driver features to suit a variety of applications. You can use the 15 position adjustable torque to get consistent driving into different materials. Smart trigger design facilitates maximum control over the operation. Convenient Construction A brushless electronic motor runs more efficiently than brushed types. This can help reduce the tool's energy consumption.

The DeWalt DCD778 is a balanced 20-watt compact drill. This is one of the most powerful drills made by DeWalt. It has numerous features that make it perfect for both medium to large size jobs and the occasional small job. If you were a professional tradesperson, you might want a bigger battery to go with this combi drill. 1.5 Ah batteries are slimline and lightweight, but don’t expect to drill hundreds of holes in a row without stopping for a recharge. This is currently the best DeWalt compact combi drill you can buy, and anyone who is looking for a drill this size will struggle to find better, even within other tool brands. Brushless Technology It has been in the market for quite some time, but finally, Dewalt is out with a new torque wrench that features what they call 15-Clutch settings. These settings allow you to apply a torque amount that will fit the job without exceeding the torque capacity of your torque wrench. In the past, I only had one or two options when it came to torque wrenches, between a universal or multi-torque grip. However, now there are multiple options from which to choose!
