The toys then realize that they are heading toward an incinerator, and try to run for it, but are unable to outrun the speed of the conveyor belt. Lotso notices an emergency stop button on the top of a ladder, and Buzz and Woody rush over to help Lotso climb up the ladder toward the button, but Lotso turns away, leaving the toys to die in the incinerator. After the toys are dropped into a large bowl toward the flames, Jessie frantically asks Buzz what they are going to do next, and Buzz, coming to realize that he and his friends are deprived of any escape chance, takes Jessie's hand with one arm as they finally admit their feeling for each other inside themselves. The other toys do the same as they realize that they are now facing death, and Buzz reaches his other arm out to take Woody's hand. The toys are rescued at the last moment by a giant claw commandeered by the Aliens. It is interesting to note that in every Toy Story film (excluding the fourth film) there is one delusional Buzz Lightyear toy who believes he is a space ranger.

In Toy Story 3, Andy has grown up and is preparing to leave for college. Few toys still remain, and all (except Woody) come to agree that the best thing for them to do is donate themselves. Under Buzz's leadership, they are taken to Sunnyside Daycare, home to toys that have been outgrown by their owners. The leader of the daycare, Lotso, promises Andy's toys that they'll live a long and happy life with Sunnyside, solidifying their decision to stay. This angers Woody, who believes they should return home. The other toys reluctantly refuse, and a downhearted Buzz bids Woody farewell. Inside the garbage factory, Buzz and the others narrowly escape termination and return to Andy's home the next morning. They wash themselves off and place themselves in a box meant for the attic, which Andy had always intended for them to go while he takes Woody to college. Instead, however, they are donated to a little girl named Bonnie, who loves and cares for them just as much as Andy did in the past. The quality of Buzz's voice box deteriorated within the ten years between Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, and is now on par with Woody's sound quality (and the original Thinkway Buzz Lightyear action figure). That evening, Buzz regrets having moved into the Caterpillar Room and wants him and the other toys to be moved with Lotso, so he sneaks out of the room, with help from the other toys, to find him. Following a few of Lotso's henchmen, he sneaks into the vending machine and climbs to the very top, only to overhear what the Sunnyside toys are planning to do with Buzz and his friends. However, just as Buzz is about to leave the vending machine, he bumps into Big Baby, who has just entered and throws Buzz onto the table, and Lotso's henchmen capture him and bring him to Lotso.

In the Disney–Pixar Toy Story franchise, Buzz wears a green, purple, and white space suit. Buzz Lightyear is a recurring character in all of the Toy Story franchise's animated films, including spin-offs. Notably, Woody serves as the main protagonist throughout the four films in the series, while Buzz remains an important character. In Toy Story (1995), unlike most other toys, Buzz initially believes himself to be the "real" Buzz Lightyear and comes to terms with actually being just a toy; in Toy Story 2 (1999), Buzz encounters other Buzz Lightyear action figures from the toyline who similarly believe themselves to be "real" including one of the character's in-universe archenemy and father: Emperor Zurg; in Toy Story 3 (2010), set ten years later, Buzz explores a romance with cowgirl figure Jessie, while he uncovers his Spanish mode; while in Toy Story 4 (2019), Buzz finds his inner voice and bids farewell to Woody, who leaves to be with Bo Peep. Hey! Tuberous Root Man! Wake up!" —Buzz angrily calls for Mr. Potato Head in his cell "Impossible!" —Buzz, as he sees a real potato instead of Mr. Potato Head in his cell Ken: "Good work, Lightyear! Resume your, uh...Space-guy thing-y!" a b Pearlman, Robert Z. (May 29, 2008). "Buzz Lightyear Becomes Real Space Ranger". Space.com . Retrieved March 12, 2009. Buzz: "No, he didn't! We have a friend in need, and we will not rest until he's safe in Andy's room! Now let's move out!" —Buzz Lightyear, as he reprimands the toys for requesting a rest Buzz: "Is everyone present and accounted for?" Buzz Lightyear's name was inspired by Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second person to walk on the Moon after Neil Armstrong.

Rex was very polite to Buzz when the two first met, and Buzz has continued to be a positive role model and source for his friend to draw from ever since. Buzz Lightyear's catchphrase, "To Infinity and Beyond", was referenced in Beyonce's song "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)". The role of Buzz Lightyear was originally offered to Billy Crystal who turned it down, a move he later admitted regretting. Crystal eventually voiced Mike Wazowski, a character in Monsters, Inc.. Also, Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, Bruce Willis, Jon Lovitz, and Phil Hartman were also considered for the role. It is interesting to note that in every Toy Story film (except for the fourth film), there is one delusional Buzz Lightyear toy who believes he is a real Space Ranger.
