Description

I wish there had been more detailed maps for some of them, but overall a very enjoyable book (and Baarle in Belgium and the Netherlands is clearly an inspiration for China Miéville’s ‘The City and the City’). It's a pity because otherwise the design is pretty thoughtful (another quibble is that few of the maps are a little basic). Tell us why you liked or disliked the book; using examples and comparisons is a great way to do this. Welcome to this compendium of interesting, unexpected and downright bizarre geographical anomalies that are guaranteed to delight and inspire. The world is full of little-known geographical anomalies, sometimes the source of diplomatic friction but always of wonderment.

Relationships are strained, new attachments are formed and the beautiful little differences that make each of us unique are examined closely as they ponder how well we know our loved ones.Having worked and lived in Australia, England, Scotland and Ireland, and having travelled in over 70 countries, Vitali is the author of 15 books translated into many languages. Starting his career in the former USSR, where he became known as the country's first investigative journalist, he was forced to defect in January 1990. Two identical couples slip through the cracks from other universes and find themselves trapped in a world which is almost, but not quite, like their own.

Vitali lives with his partner Christine and Tashi, a furry Tibetan Terrier, in a small English town not far from London. If you are a geography fan, a history fan or someone who likes weird, interesting facts, try this book. The designers have decided not to indent paragraph breaks, which makes for an awkward look -- compounded by overly long line lengths. The bulk of the entries are exclaves or enclaves, or some variation thereof and the book is best consumed in short bursts, as all the administrative minutiae starts to run together if one reads too much at a go. Atlases are collections of maps in book form, and are a valuable resource for learning more about the world. Join the East of England committee to hear all about Vitali's latest book, Atlas of Geographical Curiosities , a compendium of interesting, unexpected, and downright bizarre geographical anomalies that are guaranteed to delight and inspire.

He has worked as a journalist for some of the major English-language newspapers, and is now a Royal Literary Fund Fellow as well as a Writing Fellow and Teaching Associate at the University of Cambridge.
