Her latest novel is DEATH IN THE SUNSHINE - the first book in her new Retired Detectives Club series featuring four recent retirees living in a luxury 55+ resort community in Florida, USA. As an online travel agent, we let you build your own holiday by giving you access to a wide range of As a huge fan of Steph Broadribb’s Lori Anderson series, I was excited to see what direction she would go in with The Retired Detectives Club but admittedly also quite worried, as that book description reminded me just a little bit too much of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club. The comparisons between the two are rather inevitable and for me, personally, this one falls a tad short.

now, if this was a romance novel, the characters' dynamics would be all different.in romance novels, (the few i have read) women seem to give up all their agency to be swept away by something larger than themselves, they wouldn't be taking charge and we all know what happens when a woman meets a vampire in a romance novel. A side note: I'm not even slightly embarrassed to admit I own all three U.S. editions. If a new edition of SUNSHINE comes out, I buy it. End of story. It helps that they're all so very pretty. If pressed, I will admit that the original hardcover with the chandelier is my favorite. But I adore all three. And the important thing is that they're there. On my shelves. So that when the urge arises, I can take them out and stroke them and know that they're there and that they're loved. I know. But like I said--not even a little embarrassed.I loved the tone and intention of this endeavor. It’s not perfect, but it’s a valiant effort. I’m sure I’d highlight lots if I got my hands on a print copy of this devo, and it might be something I’d point my daughter to use.

So whilst I enjoyed much of the book, I found myself falling asleep a lot because it would launch into these long stories like my 80 year old grandma does when you ask her how her day was. I'm fine with characters with flaws, but not when there isn't anything else to like about them. Death can bring out the worse in people, and boy does it do that here. Kate doesn't give amputating her leg a real consideration...because she doesn't want her daughter to have a one-legged mother? No mother is better? Her daughter's father shows up for five minutes, growls, and inexplicably disappears. Her new husband Sam's patience eventually wears thin, and he goes off and leaves his adopted daughter for a bit when the going gets rough. Everyone makes big grandiose statements about looking out for Kate's little girl, Jill, but then go and do whatever gives them some short term satisfaction. Catalina is a fiercely independent woman who ran away from her past but now she has to face it at her sister’s wedding where her former fiance is the best man. I began the dance by taking off my bra and giving him a motorboat: a stripper term for jiggling your breasts lightly across a man’s face in rapid succession. This is one of the only ways a stripper is allowed to touch a customer in the private rooms of the NT.I think it's worth just being aware as a librarian or teacher, that death from cancer is a storyline within the book. It is dealt with sensitively, however, for some children this may be a triggering issue.

cheap flights, hotels and transfer suppliers, saving you money. And it’s great to know that when you so i guess i can see how this book would appeal to self-possessed women more than the romance-novel variety... When writing a devotional, or book geared towards helping a Christian grow in their faith, the focus should always be God. Once, when I was a little kid, my parents bought me my favourite ice cream. There's actually only one kind of ice cream that I actually like and that's mint choc chip. Only they bought this MASSIVE bowl of it with a banana in it and extra chocolate sauce. I can only guess that they'd finally decided to slowly kill me via diabetes, cholesterol and blood-pressure, and be rid of my annoying, argumentative, five-year-old ways. This is very heart warming. As soon as I read the synopsis, I knew I would have the best time reading this. The best thing about middle grade novels is that they always have something to tell to adults as well. Then there are the men. The managers are all terrible rip-off artists and bullies. The bouncers resent the girls they have to protect because they earn so much more than them. The boyfriends are rarely faithful, most of them live off their girlfriend's earnings while watching soap operas all day,and don't seem to be desirable in any way except they probably have the right size penises. With the exception of the author, it seems all the strippers are very promiscuous, ‘When you say small, exactly how little are we talking?’ Candy asked.

I found this very distracting. I kept translating it in my head to third person past tense, which seems a more natural way of describing things. I've seen third person present tense used in short stories to increase a sense of immediacy and or intimacy but this story doesn't deliver either of those things. The story feels like it's being told at arm's length. Even though each chapter is told from the point of view of one of the main characters, you don't get inside their heads. It reads like a screenplay with added notes for the actors. As is common in a first book setting up a series, it struggles to juggle pace & interest with the development of their world.
