Through his never-before-seen diaries - a twenty-five-year passion project - Rickman invites readers backstage and into his life.

Alan Rickman remains one of the most beloved actors of all time across almost every genre, from his breakout role as Die Hard 's villainous Hans Gruber to his heart-wrenching run as Professor Severus Snape, and beyond. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate new audiences today. It’s possible to go through this book, as if with a metal detector, and retrieve shreds of tabloid coin . Yes he's a bit cantankerous and yes he's pretty opinionated but no, he's never rude or disrespectful. In between and since there have been all those wonderful film roles, and not least, his long stint as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films. A certain sighing impatience dogs him and he doesn’t mince his words, at least in private: “15 May, 2004.

He turns down another script with this: “Would not require acting – just getting on with it while the camera has a look. Madly, Deeply also includes a foreword by Emma Thompson and a selection of Rickman’s early diaries, dating from 1974 to 1982, when his acting life first began.

As much as I still adore and respect this remarkable man, this was a book I simply couldnt read and finish. Rickman also had plenty to say about his young Harry Potter cast mates, Ratcliffe and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger).

Quite frankly, he's such a loyal friend and partner, more fun loving than I ever realised, dealt with more tragedy than I knew and saw more of the world than can ever be put into a diary. I have long been a fan of Alan’s work, and admired what I believed to be his warm heart as well as his incredible talent.one last great Rickman performance: challenging, uncompromising, utterly unique and truly mesmerising. but this isn’t done consistently, and some clarifications are instead given by footnote at the end of the year (which is not very helpful for anyone, like myself, reading an ebook copy). He is especially poleaxed by the massacre at Dunblane, which he hears about while improbably holed up at a health spa. He does poke criticism at those in his life; friends, actors and colleagues which has struck controversy of late, especially some of the cast of Harry Potter that they didn't appear ready in some scenes.
