Description

While the Rowntree Society “ found no evidence that the Rowntree family owned or traded in enslaved people”, it did identify five areas of concern – and called for fuller research. Most of our photos today come from Rowntrees. But to preserve the balance, we though we ought to include at least one Terry's photograph. It shows students from Ampleforth School touring the Easter Egg production lines at Terry's in 1973... Many editions also featured the plans and ambitions of those who left the company to start their own businesses and encouraged current employees to support them. In the Autumn 1929 edition, we learn of individuals becoming, chimney sweeps, travelling greengrocery tradesmen and one who opens a pie business in York. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) issued a statement statement saying they were appalled by the findings: “ We are deeply sorry that the origins of our endowment have roots in shameful practices that caused deep suffering and created enduring harms.” Here we are stationed at Hedon, in the camp which was left by our 1 st Battery on their departure for France. The weather is glorious and is ideal for field work, and all branches of military training. The usual routine of parades is the following: 5:30 a.m. ‘ Reveille’, 6 a.m. ‘Fall in’ for squad drill until ‘Cookhouse’ is blown at 7:15 a.m. The next parade is at 8:30 a.m., when an inspection of clothes, buttons, etc., takes place. This is followed by ‘Physical’ or, as some of our fellows call it, ‘Mystical drill’. Thanks to their training received at the Gym., I knew the exercises almost as well as the instructor, and now I take a squad of men every morning. We have a very large number of ‘Cocoa Nibs’ in our battery, in fact, I have 12 in my hut. Perhaps you will remember some of them- ‘Little’ Milner, Lawson, ‘Boxer’ Howden and Frank Ayers.”

It is four months since I joined the R.F.A., and I have had a fortnight’s training at Leeds, eight weeks at Strensall, and the remainder down South, where we are at present. I am getting on fine as a wheel driver in the gun team, but we have not such a comfortable time as I enjoyed with Mr. Eastwood in the Time Office and Mr. Sheppard in the Store Room.” As they spent little time fighting fires, the Rowntree Fire Brigade served as a social club for the firemen and their families. In the Cocoa Works Magazine, there are several references to billiards competitions. These competitions were played within the brigade themselves, but also against other billiards clubs in York. For example, in November and December 1908, the Fire Brigade played the Liberal Club in Billiards. There were also social evenings. On 27 January 1909, the Fire Brigade and their families hosted the ambulance service for a joint social, where they played draughts. From 1902 to 1986, the CWM chronicled the progress of Rowntree & Co. and its staff. The journal focused on the lives of ordinary people, regardless of rank or role. The first Editor spoke of the difficulty of producing ‘at regular intervals a magazine which must touch so many interests and be read by such a diversity of readers.’ He concluded that “The CWM is a social affair, a matter of the fireside, the newsletter sent round the family circle…” As part of this revived community, residents will enjoy revitalized gardens and communal spaces. Thoughtfully designed social, wellbeing and easy living features encourage you to relax and socialize with family, friends and neighbours.

Cadbury, Deborah (2010). Chocolate Wars: The 150-Year Rivalry Between the World's Greatest Chocolate Makers. PublicAffairs. p. 264. ISBN 978-1-58648-925-0. Rowntree's Tooty Frooties were launched in 1963 and are chewy fruit sweets with a crunchy sugar shell. Joseph realised that tastes were changing. People wanted a purer product and, after a lot of time and effort, Joseph developed Rowntree’s Elect Cocoa in 1887. Marketed as ‘ more than a drink, a food’, it too proved popular. The JRF Trustees and JRHT Board said they are committed to recognising and learning from every part of our history.

The magazine was professionally printed, initially in cream and brown but eventually in colour, in a distinctive house style. Over time, the number of photographs and illustrations grew, many provided by increasingly expert amateur photographers from among Rowntree staff. The CWM’s consistent quality and regular publication indicate unwavering support from the Board.Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles contain real fruit juice and no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. The Rowntree factory continued operating during the war years and the Cocoa Works Magazine gives an insight into lists of employees serving (and falling) at the front, and examples of the pastoral efforts made within the changed circumstances of the war years. Collections for Wounded Soldiers The Yorkie and Lion chocolate bars were introduced in 1976. [6] In 1978, the Hershey contract was renegotiated, giving Hershey the rights to the Kit Kat and Rolo brands in the US in perpetuity. [6]

The CWM provides a unique insight into the lives of the ‘ordinary’ staff at the Cocoa Works. It shows us something important about how these people lived, what they valued and how greatly they contributed to the ongoing success of Rowntree & Co. It is especially important to us that the experiences of people whose labour was taken under duress and slavery should occupy a more prominent place in the Rowntree story. We should have done this much earlier.”I am thankful to be able to say that I feel in the best of health and condition. At present we are in one of the hottest parts of the line, and I had a taste of shell-gas during the past week. I was at a gas demonstration yesterday, and had a taste of all the different kinds of gas used by the Germans. There is nothing to fear in any of it now, as every man is provided with a helmet which is a sure protection.” The Cocoa Works Magazine – known affectionately as the ‘CWM’ – is one of the first magazines produced in England that was written just for factory staff. Issue number 1 was printed in March 1902 – slightly ahead of Cadbury’s staff magazine, which came out 9 months later. Described as ‘A Journal in the interests of employees of Rowntree & Co Ltd, York’, it was conceived by Joseph Rowntree as a means of maintaining communication between workforce and management at a time of rapid expansion. York remains the head office for Nestlé Confectionery, producing over a billion KitKats a year and is also the home for Aero, Aero Bubbles, Polo, Yorkie and Milkybar. The former Rowntree factory is also the location for Nestlé’s global centre for confectionery research in the form of the Product Technology Centre. ‘Five areas of concern’ The Cocoa Works outright sale The Cocoa Works shared ownership Built by Joseph Rowntree in the early 1890s, this was York’s famous garden factory.

Reports of the Central Works Council meetings were always included in later editions. They detailed management decision-making and included debates such as the difference between ‘control’ and ‘consultation’, why people pilfered bicycles (December,1921) and what had led to ‘grievances in the cake department’. The shop went on to specialise in tea, coffee and a chocolate drink bought-in from Bristol. William’s son Henry followed him into the business and in 1785 they began to manufacture of cocoa and chocolate themselves.
