I came away from this one with something of a dissatisfied feeling but Blackman has secured my readership again with that damn cliff.

In 2008 she received an OBE for her services to children's literature, and between 2013 and 2015 she was the Children's Laureate. The first quarter of the book, Persephone's point of view is in second person, addressing her daughter, which I found really interesting. So what I learnt from this book was that is a McGregor child falls in love with a Cross it ends with at least one death. Or how Nought women get implants to make their lips fuller or spend longer in sunbeds to make themselves darker. However, he finds himself in love with a cross and he lets what he's be taught down the toilet and he sticks with his judgement and continues to love said cross.

She also allows him a potential saving grace in the character of Cara Imega but the pull of hatred is too strong for him to actually rise up against it and be better which does and an element of tragedy to his character even though he is obviously very evil. For example, in Blackman’s world Nought music is seen as offensive and all about sex, in much the same way as black music is treated by some people today.Children’s fiction has long been the repository of great satirical writing, but Blackman’s [series] takes it into levels unseen since Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. I feel kind of guilty for not reading this series until now, when the first book was published about twenty years ago. The vast majority are children’s novels, but she has also written Young Adult novels, early-reader books and picture books. He also, due to his rabid hatred of all Crosses, finds himself engaged in more and more extreme behaviour, with a harrowing scene about halfway through the book concerning a Cross woman with whom he forms a relationship, meaning to steal from her, and for whom he starts to have feelings - which he cannot accept and which lead to tragedy. She’s up and down about whether she loves her baby or not, which could hold the promise of an interesting discussion, but her thoughts on the matter are shallow, so you don’t get to understand her thought process.
