Description

Well-known Japanese "fairy tale" [a] are often found in the Otogi-zōshi or the Konjaku Monogatarishū. Familiar Tales is the latest 1-4 player adventure game from Plaid Hat Games. Players take on the role of a wizard’s four familiars who set upon a quest to guide a precious infant through the fairytale land of Principalia -- an epic journey that will also encompass the babe’s childhood and adolescence! To capture the classical-animation vibe we were going for, we found Vanessa Morales. She has a distinct style that was perfect for capturing the unique characters and villains featured in the story.

Throughout the game you will be discovering three digit codes, either from the travel map or the location book spaces, and sometimes even from cards. Type the exact code into the blank field and you will be presented with story elements along with instructions or effects. Listen to the audio clip, then follow any instructions given. However, as you only draw up at the end of your turn, this means you will have fewer cards to use during your next turn. Thoughts On Gameplay The most similar of these to Familiar Tales is Stuffed Fables in which you play as stuffed toys protecting their little girl from the creatures in her nightmares. Like Familiar Tales, it is a campaign game well suited for both adult and child players. The story is a little simpler and doesn’t use an app, but there is still a vast cast of fun characters, a cool plot, some spooky scenes, and lots of battles to be had with the multiple types of enemies. But of course my perspective is always from that of a dad, and I’m always thinking about adults playing games with their kids. And I simply couldn’t recommend this game enough for families. And, quite honestly, you probably already know if Familiar Tales is for you and your family. Masson, Elsie. (1929). Folk Tales of Brittany, Philadelphia: MaCrae, Smith & Company. Prince Rupert's dog [ edit ] Prince Rupert and his "familiar" dog in a pamphlet titled "The Cruel Practices of Prince Rupert" (1643)All in all, Familiar Tales provides a rich story for the players to explore and influence, with multiple outcomes and compelling characters you want to keep spending time with. Setup & Gameplay All of the art in Familiar Tales is beautiful. I especially love the illustrations of the stat cards showing the familiars in action. I also love how every storybook map is different, evocative and interesting and full of detail.
