Description

The extended Shrek family is strongly represented in DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing; the eponymous ogre, his ogre wife Fiona, Donkey, and Puss in Boots are all playable racers. Wolf from Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is also playable, but one of two characters exclusive to a digital deluxe version of the game (the other is Master Oogway from Kung Fu Panda). Each character will have their own kart — Shrek’s looks all swampy, Fiona’s is onion-inspired, and Donkey’s is modeled after the mother of his children — that can be upgraded with cosmetics and other customizations. MULTIPLE RACING MODES: Awesome online and split-screen local multi-player for non-stop action the entire family will love. The so-called DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing isn’t due out for a few months yet, but that hasn’t stopped DreamWorks and team from posting a trailer or two to give us a deeper insight into what’s to come. Kung Fu Panda in a tiny candy-popping kart? Sure, why not? But that’s not all it’ll bring, as made clear by the elevator pitch the studio posted earlier this week. Interested? If so, then here’s everything you will need to know before signing the waiver and getting behind the wheel. Take it away, Puss. What Is DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing? DreamWorks Animation all-stars Shrek, Puss in Boots, Boss Baby, Hiccup, and a whole bunch of Trolls are getting the Mario Kart treatment for a new game: DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing. The crossover kart racer will span two decades of the DreamWorks cinematic catalog, borrowing characters from the Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon films, as well as Megamind and The Bad Guys. In addition to DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing, DreamWorks’ Trolls are coming to a separate game as well, DreamWorks Trolls Remix Rescue. Developed by Petit Fabrik, Trolls Remix Rescue is a 3D platformer that tasks players with saving the Trolls Kingdom from “a melodic mastermind who’s trying to alter the Trolls’ musical harmony forever,” GameMill said in an announcement.

Even on Xbox Series X|S the graphics are a little rough. We recently came from a review of Disney Speedstorm, and the difference is night and day. That game’s overblown visual flourishes and dynamism is completely absent here, and DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing ends up looking a little drab and basic as a result. The game features full voice acting, complete with banter between the characters. Many lines have the characters call each other out by name, or through name calling. There are references to his true identity however, which includes quotes from The Last Wish, his kart being a coffin, and a new line, "I'm here Farquaad!" The third time Eric Bauza voiced Puss in Boots in a major production following The Adventures of Puss in Boots, and The Trident. Despite being revealed as Death in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, he is still referred to as "Wolf" in the game.To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software. Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent. See PlayStation.com/bc for more details. Randall Duk Kim, the voice of Grand Master Oogway in the Kung Fu Panda films, is the only original voice actor to reprise his role for the game. ALL-STAR CAST OF DREAMWORKS CHARACTERS: Who will you choose? With favorites such as Shrek, Po, Tigress, Boss Baby, Puss in Boots, Hiccup, and Astrid, it’ll be hard to choose just one. The second overall appearance of Shrek and Donkey in the 2020's (third for Shrek including his cameo in The Pentaverate).Death and Grand Master Oogway have access to a selection of custom parts designed to represent the famous DreamWorks logo (the blue clouds as the chassis and the Moon Child on the tires). Awesome Karts – Each character boasts their own uniquely styled kart to race. Players can put their own twist on each ride with hundreds of customisable parts and accessory combinations. Two additional characters will be available as part of DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing’s Deluxe Edition: Master Oogway from Kung Fu Panda and Wolf from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish . Characters from the Troll movies will host each race, and players will be able to collect Trolls to race alongside them for added support. The game will also feature classic locations from the movies these characters hail from, such as the Kingdom of Far Far Away from the Shrek sequels, Bergen Town from Trolls, the Spirit Realm from Kung Fu Panda, Baby Corp from The Boss Baby, and New York City Zoo from Madagascar. Meanwhile, there were several licensed Shrek video games released during the lovable (if crude) green ogre’s theatrical heyday. While most of these games were standard movie tie-in fare that was soon forgotten, there are still plenty of gamers with fond memories of playing the team-oriented Shrek 2 game or 2005’s Super Smash Bros. clone Shrek SuperSlam. In the years since Shrek’s last cinematic outing, gamers have kept his memory alive through memes and mods that inserted him into titles like Resident Evil 3 and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This is the fifth DreamWorks racing game, following Shrek: Swamp Kart Speedway, Shrek Smash n' Crash Racing, Madagascar Kartz, and DreamWorks Super Star Kartz.

The sheer number of route-permutations is extremely high, and builds a high skill ceiling for DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing. Miss a lyre, which is easy to do considering that they only appear once the previous one is collected, and you’re at a severe disadvantage. Fail to notice that a secret passage lies up that aeroplane chassis in the Madagascar level, and you’re playing catch up. For younger players it might be frustrating to see daddy suddenly appear in the distance, and online multiplayer (plus the later difficulties) demands that you use them well. But it equally adds depth to the racing. Each character boasts their own uniquely styled kart to race,”‘the description continues. “Players can put their own twist on each ride with hundreds of customizable parts and accessory combinations.” At the time of writing, GameMill Entertainment hasn’t released any footage to showcase DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing in all its glory. Needless to say that the likelihood of it getting a launch trailer at some point in the next several weeks seems pretty high. Until then, all we’ve got are the screenshots. Release Date, Platforms & Editions DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing will be heading to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC via Steam at some point in 2023. As for when in 2023 it’ll see the light of day remains a mystery, though it’s fair to say that it’ll be targeting a Q4 launch, perhaps to coincide with the pre-holiday season rush, if anything. This isn’t DreamWorks’ first foray into kart racing by a long shot. DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing stands on the shoulders of 2006’s Shrek Smash n’ Crash Racing, 2009’s Madagascar Kartz, and 2011’s DreamWorks Super Star Kartz, all of which featured a raceable Shrek.

Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Northern Ireland and the Scottish Highlands) may take longer to reach you. The first time the four original main characters from Shrek were featured together since Shrek 4-D in 2003. NL was way too harsh on NASB2. The performance is really not that bad, other than the load times, which can last up to 30 seconds just to start a match. There are also certain missions in the campaign where the game just doesn't load at all, which is a pretty egregious oversight. But the devs have said they have it fixed and are rolling out a patch for that, as well as the load times and frame drops. So with all that said, I'm gonna take this review with a grain of salt. The gameplay looks solid, although I did see some footage of the Switch version, and it unfortunately does look way worse graphically than on other platforms. This is honestly a very pretty looking game on PS and Xbox from what I've seen, but some of the levels like the Madagascar one and Shrek's swamp have lots of missing grass and tree leaves, and what is there looks like something from an N64 game. So I'm really conflicted on this one. I don't want an ugly version of the game, but I also don't really want it on another platform. I might just wait for a sale since I already have the MK8 DX DLC that just dropped, as well as Disney Speedstorm to keep me busy for now.

About This Game

DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing is exactly what it sounds like — a kart racing game featuring none other than a collected bunch of friendly faces and misfits stripped directly from some of the animation studio’s most celebrated works. To this end, players can expect to dive into a Mario Kart-type experience as heroes such as Shrek, Po, Alex the Lion, and even Boss Baby, for crying out loud. Sound like your typical run-of-the-mill karting game with a touch of DreamWorks’ signature paint? That’s because it is — and it’s doing nothing to tell us otherwise. Not that it’s a problem, mind you. It’s about time we received a spiritual successor to 2009’s Shrek Kart, to be fair.
