This appears to be the most likely source for the word, although we’re sure there will be some who have other ideas (and please do get in contact, if you know something more about it). The labelling designations are: VS (Very Special) with a minimum of two years’ ageing, VSOP (Very Special Old Pale) with four years and XO (Extra Old) with 10 years. To learn about our personal data protection practices, and to exercise your rights please read our Personal Data and Cookies Policy. Add a white sugar cube to a chilled coupe glass, pour over a shot of Rémy Martin VSOP Fine Champagne Cognac, and top up with champagne. If there is any doubt in your mind about the accuracy of the data contained on this page, please ensure you check the product packaging before serving and contact us immediately.

The mature cask finish is given as a result of ageing in 20-year-old Limousin oak casks for a minimum of 1 year. The name was used by Paul-Emile Rémy Martin, the owner of the Rémy Martin cognac house, who blended the Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne crus.

On the palate: a rounded, well-balanced cognac with multiple layers of ripe fruit and subtle notes of liquorice. It can only carry the name Champagne if it is produced in the Champagne region of Northern France, and is made adhering to very strict rules. One of the "big four" Cognac houses, Rémy Martin is best known for producing some of the world's best Fine Champagne Cognac (a blend of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne spirit - the two premier appellations in the Cognac region). However, there is some disagreement from many sources about this, so we feel it only fair to put some of the other explanations forward. To bring out the amazing texture of Rémy Martin VSOP, enjoy a glass served neat or on ice with a vanilla macaroon or simply neat with blue cheese bites.

This may affect nutrition and allergen information therefore you should always check product labels and not rely solely on the information presented here. Fine Champagne is produced from eaux-de-vie from two crus (Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne), which have very chalky soil. This original VSOP blend is the reference of the house of Rémy Martin - the pure, authentic essence of Cognac Fine Champagne.

And for more on the terroirs, take a look at this article on growth areas that helps explain further. Cognac Expert has got the definitive explanation to demystify the Cognac/Champagne issue once and for all. Today, it continues to hold its place as one of the best amongst cognac connoisseurs all over the world. These often coincided with areas that had a predominantly chalky soil, such as the Grande and Petite Champagne terroirs of the Cognac region, and the growth areas in Northern France where the sparking wine, Champagne, is produced. François Voyer is above all a family story and their care for quality starts in the vineyards and its 28 hectares of Ugni Blanc, cultivated on the chalky soils of the region. Hence the word ‘campagna’ became associated with such areas, and this eventually was modified into the word, Champagne’.Among the major cognac houses, Rémy Martin is a specialist in this type of production, while other houses such as Braastad, De Luze, Hine and Tiffon all produce and sell Fine Champagne cognacs.
