The book is an insight into her mind, as I feel poetry is to every poet (poetry is one of the most expressive forms of writing). All in all, it is best to keep in mind that one shouldn’t read Ariel and hope to find Plath from her Mad Girl’s Love Song days, for by the time Ariel came to be, Plath has long changed. A bright, square copy, a few marks to spine, tiny crease to outer margin of first 13 pages, else fine, in the fresh jacket, spine panel sunned with a few nicks and creases to ends, tips lightly rubbed, else sharp. Unlike the original story, the mermaid does not give up her voice to become human, but she still fails to win the prince's heart when he falls in love with the princess who found him.

The world needs more sci-fi/fantasy mashups that are not completely ridiculous (and this one's less ridiculous* than most sci-fantasy attempts). The world itself is an interesting concept, though there were some niggling inconsistencies in what works and what doesn't. Shaughnessey is clearly meant to be seen as a selfish b***h, yet this does not tally with having a real love for Ariel as she must know her actions will cause the unicorn heartbreak. On January 16, 2004, The Independent newspaper in London published an article that ranked Ariel as the 3rd best book of modern poetry among 'The 10 Best Modern Poetry Books.Even before she sees the prince, she displays an intense longing to visit the world above the sea through her actions such as: arranging the flowers in her garden into the shape of the sun, listening to her grandmother and sisters' stories of the surface, and peeking in through the window of the prince's cabin during his birthday celebrations. Pete and Ariel continue their aimless wandering until they decide to travel to New York to confront a wizard who sent a henchman after them because he wants Ariel's horn to use its magic power. The first is a largely personal poetry, intense and delicately rendered, usually dealing with the relationship of the poet and a perceived object from which she seeks illumination, ‘that rare, random descent. Set in current times after "the change" (when virtually all but the most primitive technology stops working and magical creatures start showing up), Ariel features a dull and wimpy main character who teams up with a talking unicorn to battle an evil necromancer. Lorsqu'elle met fin à ses jours le 11 février 1963 à Londres, Sylvia Plath laisse derrière elle le manuscrit de son second recueil de poèmes, Ariel.
