And, if that isn’t enough, bird feces carry serious diseases that can be passed to humans. Gull droppings pose a serious health risk, which is why health inspectors can shut down business that shows evidence of unmanaged seagull problems. As Defender® Fixing Silicone is used predominantly outside that are exposed to the elements, so it is good to know that this spike adhesive works perfectly in temperatures ranging from -60 °C to 180 °C and is also formulated to be corrosion free. The Defender® Fixing Silicone has a life expectancy of 35 years. High Quality Defender® Fixing Silicone Gulls are a high profile issue in the UK and increasingly urban property and areas need to be protected. There are many seagull deterrents and control measures that can be put in place to avoid disruption and menace that gulls bring.

Prevent pigeons, indian mynas, sparrows, starlings and other pest birds from perching on your property. Defender® Spike Fixing Silicone Caulking Gun and if you haven't used one before, there is a handy guide here: "How to use a Caulking Gun Guide" Step 1 - Clean the Area: Before starting any installation of seagulls spikes, it is essential that the area is clean, dry and free from droppings and debris. It is important to look up; it may be that the source of the mess is actually from ledges or pipes higher up on the building. If this is the case you will need to spike these as well. If this is not done, then droppings, twigs etc. may fall onto the seagull spikes below rendering them less effective. Our Spike Installers’ Kits (BS314) come with everything you will need to undertake a safe and effective installation. Gulls are expert scavengers and have probably moved to urban areas due to waste and litter being a readily available food source. Urban rooftops are an ideal replacement for their natural nesting habitat so gull proofing likely nesting points will prevent your property being used. Using a specially trained bird of prey as a deterrent is also an effective means to deter gulls. First, spray the area with a disinfectant to soften and loosen dried droppings. If using Germ Clear™, leave to soak for a minimum of 5 minutes. Then use the scraper to remove the excess droppings or nesting debris into the bin bag; repeat this process several times. When all the loose debris is removed, including moss, lichen, dirt and dust, use the stiff brush, sponge and soapy water to remove any remaining residue until completely clean. Once completed, the cleaned areas must be left to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before installation. Economical and lightweight – Sturdy polycarbonate base does the same job as stainless steel at a fraction of the cost. Spikes are designed to deter light-weight birds of no more than one kilo in weight. Do not use them to prevent human-intruders, cats or other animals, as serious injury may occur.

Use your fingers to press the polycarbonate base of the strip down firmly on the surface to which it is to be applied (that you have previously primed) so that rivets of glue come up through the holes in the base. Do not attempt to secure a spike by pushing on the spike points. Do not disturb the spike for at least 24 hours after gluing. It is important to wear appropriate PPE when installing bird spikes, use our 1 person PPE kit GC089 Spikes are a versatile deterrent solution, but there are a number of situations where spikes are not the best answer. It’s important to truly understand the behavior of the birds in the area before proceeding with any control solution. Nesting Gulls Step 1 – Safety: Your safety is paramount. Please ensure you can safely reach your chimney pots without endangering yourself or others. If you have any doubt, it would be best to engage the services of someone who is used to working at height, such as builders and roofers.Marine Grade Stainless Steel is now offered as an alternative to 304 Stainless Steel. It is particularly resistant to corrosion caused by sodium chloride. This makes it the ideal choice for use in harsh coastal areas. Rooftops are an ideal replacement to replace their natural nesting habitat and urban areas often inadvertently provide a regular food source. Once a gull has nested they will return each year to the same area unless they are prevented access. This can be done through the use of seagull spikes. Due to the nature of bird control issues, the areas needing to be proofed will often be high up on your property and hard to access. If you intend to do the bird-proofing yourself, you must be confident using ladders and working at height. If you cannot do the work yourself, please get in touch with a roofer, pest control company or handyman to assist you. The good news is that they can easily be protected. There is a range of suitable Defender® Bird Spikes for this job, which will come down to the width of your timber cross beams. Most Defender® Bird Spikes are available in plastic or steel. Our steel spikes come with a 25 Year Warranty, and plastic spikes have a 15 Year Warranty. They all do the same job of humanely stopping pigeons from landing on your pergola. Visibility (base) – Low profile base (5mm high) will not be seen from the ground level looking upwards

Add extra rows behind the first if needed. Leave as small a gap as possible between the rows; the pins should be almost touching to prevent the pigeons or seagulls from gaining access. Leave no gap bigger than 2.5 cm anywhere to prevent a pigeon or seagull from gaining a foothold. Whichever gull deterrent method is used it must be done legally. Gulls, like all UK birds, are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is illegal to remove their eggs and nests or disturb them once they have begun nesting. There are exceptions however, so gull control is possible under certain licence conditions depending on the risk, the gull species, and the timing of the gull management plan. Defender® Seagull Spikes will get rid of seagulls from a ledge up to 20 cm (8 inches). If the ledge is wider, you can add a second row of spikes, leaving as small a gap as possible between the tops of the pins. If the seagulls are trying to nest in or on your chimney, it is important to stop them before they begin to nest. The nesting debris the seagulls use to build a nest can cause fires if the chimney is operational. In this instance we would recommend Defender® Chimney Pot Spikes. How do seagull spikes work? Bird wire acts as an effective solution for preventing birds like seagulls, crows, and pigeons from landing and causing a nuisance. You will tend to find bird wire being used on the edge of rooftops, window sills, parapets, beams, pipes, balustrades, and they are frequently used to protect historic buildings and stately homes. Pigeons love pergolas and arbors. They offer a high-up, safe place to watch out for predators and identify food sources. The problem, in most cases, is that below them are beautiful patios, cars, pathways or seated areas which get covered in pigeon droppings.Exclusion is the best gull control solution to prevent gulls nesting or creating problems. There are, however, some gull control or deterrent solutions including seagull spiking, seagull netting, falconry response, kites or audio deterrents. The Defender® Ridge Spikes have longer pins to make them suitable for seagulls as well as pigeons. These seagull deterrent spikes are the perfect way to stop seagulls from being able to access the angled ridge of your roof, this is often a highly sort after location for them as they can look for food and are up high, safe from predators. If you can get rid of pigeons and seagulls from the roof of a property they will often abandon the building altogether. Most species have gray and white feathers and webbed feet. Seagulls are scavengers and will eat almost anything, animal or vegetable, raw or cooked, sautéed or fried. Since they’re sea birds by nature, they thrive in open spaces gathering, nesting, and feeding wherever food and water are plentiful. Locations like schools, marinas, stadiums, and beaches are seagull favorites. The Need for Gull Control

It may also be possible to complete an egg and nest removal programme but, as with all gull control methods, timing is crucial for effective and legal control. Installation – Using a suitable UV stabilised silicon adhesive or clip is critical to increasing life expectancy. The Defender® Bird Spike range has a spike suitable for pigeons, seagulls and even small garden birds like sparrows. Deciding what bird your issue is caused by is the first step. We have a range of spikes for pigeons - these will stop pigeons and like sized birds. Our spikes for seagulls have taller pins to allow for the gulls longer legs. It is important to remember that they will also work for pigeons. We also have a spike for small birds - stopping small garden birds like sparrows and starlings but also the larger birds like pigeons and seagulls too. Gull spikes are a deterrent device used to prevent seagulls from perching or landing on narrow ledges. An anti-gull spike system contains multiple rows of blunt, needle-shaped rods placed into a sturdy base at varying angles. The base can then be temporarily or permanently fastened to almost any flat surface for long-lasting protection. If a seagull has already been using the area it may be heavily soiled with seagull droppings. If this is the case please see our "How to safely clean bird droppings guide" guide for more in-depth cleaning advice. Note: Spikes should not be used to protect wide spaces like flat roofs or large roof structures (see SCS Grid Wire Seagull Deterrent Systems). Spikes are very effective protecting narrow areas such as walls, parapets, ledges and girders. Next, you need to measure the width and depth of the area that needs protecting with a tape measure. Choose the most appropriate size Defender® Bird Spike bearing in mind that any area greater than 2.5 cm should be proofed. If you are ever unsure – call us on 01626 835055, and we can help advise on what products you may need. Step 1 - Clean the Area: Before starting your Defender® Ridge Spikes installation you need to make sure that the apex ridge tiles are clean and free from moss, lichen, bird droppings and any dust or debris. This is to make sure that the silicone has a clean surface to adhere to.
