Rows. In the top row, the Key and Stork point to a successful move, but the Snake cautions against rushing ahead. The middle row bears the Cross which can mean point to having to make difficult decisions. The bottom row is very positive suggesting we’re going to feel at home again once we’ve made these changes. They could be freeing and relieving.

What is the emotional life of the querent regarding the situations? What effects is the unconscious having? The Garden is about meetings, gatherings, or the community at large, and the Star is all about wish-fulfillment and healing. So a meeting could go really well and produce the results we want. We might also be popular or appreciated within a group or a community, having accomplished something. In our example reading, when pairing the outer cards (Heart and Book), we may learn that this new stranger, despite appearances, may also have a hidden compassion that they do not show. And mirroring the inner cards (Tower and Scythe), we also learn that this companion can leave in their wake a sudden feeling of alienation. Using the above example, if we wanted to know more about the lady, we could apply mirroring to add more details. Here’s how it would work:

Having all 36 cards of the Lenormand laid out before you, it is very likely you may have no idea where to begin. Don’t you worry if you can read lines of 5 or lines of 9 spreads and remember of two cards combinations because some cards can be read in pairs. Interestingly, the 7-card line can be more challenging to read than the nine-card portrait. That’s because the longest line in a portrait is made up of just 3 cards. When putting multiple lines together, some may appear to be at odds with others, but this can simply refer to different parts of the story. A Grand Tableau is long, detailed and takes a long time to put together a reading properly. For example, when I am doing a reading, it will take me more than a day to physically complete just one reading and write the report! 2. There is no one ‘fixed’ way to read a Grand Tableau If the cards were flipped (Letter + Sun), the interpretation differs slightly. The Letter becomes the noun, which could be a conversation or document. When doing a past, present, future grand tableau with Lenormand, a popular technique to enrich the interpretation is to use houses. The houses are defined as if they were arranged numerically from 1 to 36 on the tableau, the Rider representing the first card in position 1, up to the Cross at position 36, the last position. The top row represents people, places, and things you’re aware and can currently influence, and the bottom represents things in your subconscious that have yet to come to light. Pair the center card with the second card to learn about your highest potential. Pair with the eighth card to learn about what’s motivating you that you might not fully understand.

So, in our example we have the Dog mirroring the Snake (in my notes I use the short form: Dog // Snake). This confirms that the Snake is a person and not a problem or argument about to arise. Next we mirror the Book and Lily (Book // Lily) which says that publishing brings recognition. It also seems to indicate that it may take a while for this success to come as the Lily is normally a slow acting card. It won’t be an overnight success, but it will be successful. Finally, we have the Moon card on it’s own, which speaks again of fame and success. The way to go about it doesn't differ much from the previously discussed three-card reading. The best technique for a beginner may be to read it straight through, as if it were a sentence, with each card being a single word or expression. A line consisting of Rider + Scythe + Lady + Lily + Ring may thus be interpreted as “the news gave a sharp blow to the woman, and the old pattern repeats itself". The most basic significators are the Man and the Woman. If you identify as a woman, the Woman represents you. If you identify as a man, the Man represents you. If you want to gain insight into a particular part of your life, you can choose a different significator. If there is a particular area you are concern, please locate it’s symbol corresponding to your issue and it will help you greatly. Like Tarot, the cards all have symbols; unlike the Tarot system, however, each card does not represent a particular stage on a journey, and there are no major and minor arcana. The symbols are very direct; a Key for the 'answer', for example, or a Book to represent 'knowledge'; a Ship is a journey of some kind, a Snake is a betrayal. The Rider represents an arrival; the Sun, success. You might have noticed that I take the diagonals as the most important lines, especially the first one in the portrait, because it has both the first and the central cards, and these are really key cards. It is super fun to look for patterns in a Tableau, and dig out amazing details about our reading. It is really what makes the Grand Tableau a contemplative process more than anything else. It is just amazing to spend a peaceful afternoon over a 36-card Tableau, just contemplating all of these interesting messages, and amazing connections between the cards.
