The varying anecdotes make me wonder whether The Hat Man actually changes his appearance for some reason, or whether the point of view of the encounterer influences He suspects the mysterious Gollancz, whose face, partly concealed beneath a black sombrero hat, does not seem to have aged a day in thirty years. Shown from about the knees up, a man with peachy skin, wearing a voluminous black cloak and a tall, brimmed hat, looks directly at us in this vertical portrait painting.The series re-uses the trope with another character, Logan, who dons a black cowboy hat before shooting up a saloon.

Unfortunately, large portions of the painting have suffered from abrasion and overpainting, and a thick layer of discolored varnish covers the work.

The composition is based on implied diagonal lines that follow the angles of the man’s hat and shoulders and cross in the centre of the panel, focusing our attention on his face. Some may actually try to study the human race or may try to get a rise out of us, similar to the movie “Monster’s Inc.
