Description

Linyphiidae – A name that references the scientific name for the family of sheet weavers, a type of spider. Makara – A spider from Hindu mythology that was said to have spun the first ever threads of cotton. In almost all cases, the spider has been used to connect the natural world with the spiritual. By examining these stories we can see how humans have looked towards nature to understand their own relationship with the divine. We can also gain insight into what it means to live in harmony with nature and its mysterious inhabitants. Spider Legends Across Time

A subtropical species believed to be of Asian origin, The Pantropical Huntsman Spider (Heteropoda venatoria) is one of the scariest spiders in US Homes. Arachnid – A name that references the class of joint-legged invertebrate animals that includes spiders. Much work needs to be done for proper defense as some of the largest predatory wasps eat their young. After all, spotting a spider in your immediate vicinity can be a little intense, especially if you have a major fear of the creepy crawlers. And, when one shows up in your home, it can be downright freaky. Unfortunately, you might start to notice more spiders inside your basement, attic, bathroom, and general living spaces when the weather changes.Aggroweb: A name derived from the word ‘aggravation’, meaning someone who defends the helpless and stands up to those who oppress. The limited range of the species reduces death risks as these spiders only come out in the city of Sydney, in the summer. Midnight – A name that references the dark color of a spider’s body and its tendency to be active at night. In Christianity, the spider is seen as a symbol of patience and diligence. Its web-weaving abilities were thought to represent Christ’s promise that he would protect his followers from harm.

In general, women are more feared of spiders than men (e.g., Cornelius and Averill, 1983; Gerdes et al., 2009), and it is possible that certain gender differences, in this study, could be the result of greater fear among female participants. In particular, spider chelicerae were significantly more associated with the fear of spiders in females than in the male group. Furthermore, hairiness was also more associated with disgust by females than by male respondents. Regarding the former, female participants reported greater fear of predators than male participants (e.g., Røskaft et al., 2003; Prokop and Fančovičová, 2010, 2013b). Perhaps, female lower physical condition ( Puts, 2010) and greater vulnerability to predation ( Treves and Naughton-Treves, 1999) could be ultimately responsible for a greater fear of sharp spider chelicerae. Regarding the latter, females are more disgust sensitive than males ( Curtis et al., 2004), and, therefore, hairy spiders were perceived as more disgusting for females than for males. Dragnetspin: Inspired by the mythological creature of half dragon and half spider, this superhero name suggests godlike strength combined with the agility of an insect.Chelicerae and abdomen were the scariest body traits in spider. Female participants perceived enlarged chelicerae as more frightening than their male counterparts. In contrast, and for both groups, the abdomen of the spider elicited more disgust, while enlarged chelicerae, hairiness, and enlarged legs also contributed to the perception of spiders as disgusting animals. Female respondents considered hairiness more disgusting than males. Tegenaria – As mentioned above, this name references a genus of spiders that includes the common house spider. Ancient Egyptians viewed spiders as protectors of the home and associated them with the goddess Neith, who was worshipped for being a weaver of fate. Arachne – As mentioned above, this name comes from Greek mythology and is associated with a mortal weaver who was turned into a spider by the goddess Athena.
