Description

When pressing the skirting board against the wall, you will notice that some of the adhesive may spill out of the top and out of any joints. Don’t be alarmed. This is normal. Clean away any overspill with a spatula or damp cloth to ensure a clean finish. You may need to repeat this again after a few hours. Most mitre boxes can be attached to a work bench or clamped to a table or a bench. Some of the boxes will come with clamps for holding the piece of wood you are sawing. We have yet to find a really good version of these as typically the clamps are really flimsy. It is much better to buy some wood clamps and do the job properly. The only thing I can think of without the right tools is find the outside angles with an adjustable bevel then take this to your local timber merchant along with a couple of pieces of skirting & ask them if they can cut the correct mitre by halving the angle from the adjustable bevel.

When fitting skirting, this is another type of cut you'll need to make. The most common are internal mitres and external mitres (some people refer to this as cutting corners on skirting boards). Position the wood – Place your piece of wood on the flat table of the mitre saw and push it up to the fence. Move the wood until your cutting point is directly over the centre of the blade recess on the table. One simple way of reducing the amount of damage to any mitre box is to line the bottom of the box with an old piece of plywood. Doing just that one thing will greatly reduce the amount of damage that can be caused. As a general rule though these boxes are far from ideal to work with when compared to using a powered up mitre saw. Measure and mark your wood– The first thing you need to do is to measure and mark the cutting position on your piece of wood. Once happy with the fit you can now fix in place either using adhesive or conventional methods like screws or nails. If your not sure how best to do this read our article on how to fix skirting boards. To create a skirting board corner joint, using your protractor or angle measurer, measure the angle of the corner required. If the total corner angle is 90 degrees, then you will need to cut 2 45 degree angles.

Most of our skirting boards come in 2m lengths. Therefore you’ll need to measure your walls to calculate the skirting lengths required and cut the skirting boards to the required lengths for shorter sections. You’ll also need to calculate the angle of any corners and cut the ends of your skirting boards to create the required internal and external corner joints. Internal corners face inwards, and external corners outwards, as shown in the images below. Internal corner example

Trade Secret: To ensure your measurements are correct, use a protractor, ruler, and pencil to mark your angles and a mitre box to cut.

A mitre saw is certainly the most effective way to cut skirting boards, and can be set to a multitude of different angles, so if you have any areas of skirting board which aren't 45° angles, such as in a bay window, you can still cut with ease.Mitre joints are common woodworking joints that are used to join two pieces of wood together at 90° angles. These joints are commonly used around doorways and skirting boards. In short - this simply involves drawing a guide on the skirting and then using a hand saw to follow the guide and make the cut. Carefully and precisely. There’s a lot of measuring involved to get the right angle, and even experienced professionals take their time to get it right. If you choose this method, prepare yourself for a lot of work. As you can imagine, you'll most likely be making a cut on both ends of the skirting board for several pieces of skirting (that's lots of measuring, drawing and cutting!). Unlike traditional wooden skirting boards, Orac skirting boards are made of a lightweight duropolymer meaning that you don’t need screws to fit and attach your skirting boards to the wall. The best application and finish will come from using adhesives.
