Here’s a sound sample of the Electro-Voice RE20 with no cleaning or post-processing applied. You’ll hear it working through the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and the Yamaha MG10. The podcast episode sample was from PodCraft.

The RE20 is a premium dynamic microphone, optimised to record voice. That could be anything from voice-over work, to singing, or, in our case, podcasting. Dynamic & Condenser Mics It’s commonly said that condenser mics can offer better, more nuanced vocal recordings. However, their over-sensitivity can be a curse in the wrong environment. They also tend to be more fragile, and require a power source known as ‘Phantom Power’ to work. For customers in outlying areas of the country, the price of the Extended Warranty may be marginally higher, due to the potential for higher collection and redelivery transport costs. If an item can not be repaired, a similar alternative product or cash discount (as defined in this policy) will be offered One thing I think is important to mention is that this mic (like many quality dynamics), is very low output, so for the sound to be fully realised it needs to be driven hard with gain. For this reason I thoroughly recommend purchasing either a Cloudlifter or Triton Fethead alongside this mic. These products provide a clean gain boost by utilising the phantom power in your preamps (it does not feed the signal to your mic so there is no danger to your mic). Since I have done this it has made the sound of the mic even bigger and even when played at the same volume, the difference in fullness (and the re20 is already full to begin with) between with or without a gain boost is quite significant.

In a 2010 vocal microphone shootout hosted by Sound on Sound magazine, the RE20 was judged the best for male rapper vocals, and it scored highly on other vocal types. [17] Recording magazine agreed, noting that male voices benefited the most from the RE20. [6] The large size and heavy mass of the RE20 prevent it from being used very often for live vocal performances on stage, but in the recording studio its size is not a problem. Whether its drums, bass, guitars, vocals or brass. Thanks to its cardioid polar pattern. The RE20 offers exceptional rejection from the rear of the microphone with absolutely no off-axis colouration. There's good reason why this is one of the most highly sought after dynamic microphones on the market. The inclusion of an integrated wind filter allows you to achieve that up-close intimate vocal sound. You'll be able to sing right up against the grill, without worrying about plosives or excessive sibilance ruining those all important takes. Hybrid microphone
