Brilliant story, with great characters, a superbly played evil psychopath, all put together by a great performance. Author notches up 100,000 book sales in just two years". Morpethherald.co.uk . Retrieved 2 February 2016. I’ve only read 4 of Ross’ books, 2 of which are about DCI Ryan. I am enjoying them and looking forward to the next one in the series which I am about to start Reply Apart from the editing, which her husband proudly did, she did not have to pay anything, and was pleasantly surprised when the novel took off. She has been publishing as an Indie ever since. The DCI Ryan Mysteries are set in Northumberland, which is a region of England that the author is particularly familiar with, given that she grew up there. These are fast-paced mystery and murder novels peppered with a bit of romance and humor. Certainly, understanding the relationships between the characters, the trials they have encountered in the past and the manner in which their bonds have been tested can make the DCI Ryan series more enjoyable.

Ross met her husband during her college years. It was during the months following the birth of her son that Ross began writing her first book. After visiting Lindisfarne, the author was so thoroughly impressed by the atmosphere of the Island that she couldn’t believe no one had written a crime thriller set on the location. It wasn’t long before the author’s wondering mind drove her to produce the draft for ‘Holy Island’ in 2015. L.J. Ross is a pseudonym for Louise Ross. Ross is an English author that was born in Northumberland. The author studied at King’s College London, eventually graduating with degrees in Law and spending several years practicing as an attorney in the city. Now, this really is a star studded affair. Featuring Tom Bateman as DCI Ryan and Kevin Whately as Frank Phillips, you are sure of a stunning performance. For me they both captured the characters perfectly, Whately especially making a brilliant Frank. Alun Armstrong was almost unrecognisable as Gregson but again a superb performance, and fantastic narration by Hermione Norris throughout the book, all of them keeping listeners on the hook from beginning to end. I don't think I could imagine a better cast for this to be fair and can only hope that there are more audio productions in the future to reunite (most of) them again. In the stifling summer heat of 2014, a killer has been stalking the streets of Newcastle causing city-wide panic. When the officer in charge of the case turns up dead, it falls upon Detective Chief Inspector Ryan to take up the baton and find the person responsible. Frank Phillips is sharp, sturdy and, above all else, a loyal friend. As a long-time connoisseur of stottie cakes, he knows where to procure one as readily as he knows where to find an elusive informant. His gruff, no-nonsense exterior and bawdy sense of humour belies a soft-hearted interior, which he reserves for those he loves.

I am not sure about this book! I found it clichéd and written by someone who wanted to squeeze in facts about Newcastle. The Infirmary is a brilliant production. Tom Bateman as Ryan and Kevin Whately as Frank Phillips are perfectly cast and capture the nuances of the characters superbly. Mark Bazeley—the killer, Bertie Carvel—the killer’s inner dialogue, both of whom are enough to make the blood run cold. Hermione Norris as the narrator, and the rest of the cast are all excellent and bring the story to life. The suspense is palpable and the pace is just right throughout. And, although the story is harrowing with the most terrifying and brutal villain, much is left to the imagination. Just finished The Shrine recommended to me by local library. Really enjoyed the story and it’s characters. Wish I’d started from the 1st book, but will continue with the one after this. I have read all Shetland books, but have enjoyed DCI Ryan equally, perhaps even more. Wonderfully descriptive of Northumberland and researched so that you can visualise every scene . Thank you LJRoss ReplyBecause these books are categorized under the ‘DCI Ryan Mysteries’ name, it isn’t surprising to learn that Detective Chief Inspector Ryan takes center stage in this series. When he is first introduced, Ryan has been forced to undertake a sabbatical leave. The latest book in the Lincoln Lawyer series comes out this month. This will be the 7th book in that series, and the 41st book in the Bosch Universe. Harry Bosch also plays a big part in this book. There is an event that happens in Ryan’s past that the author touches on in the series and this has been something I have been dying to read about. Well the author did not disappoint. My goodness what an absolute roller coaster of a read! Ross publishes all of her works independently through Dark Skies Publishing, a publishing imprint set up and managed by Ross and her husband. The Infirmary (DCI Ryan Mysteries, book 11) by LJ Ross

A little confession is that I sometimes use Audible books to help me drift into sleep after a busy shift at the hospital. But no sleep with this one! The set up was so interesting and the characters and performances especially the Northumberland accents grabbed my attention immediately so I sacrificed my slumbers and had to listen. I was surprised by some of the description of the torture scenes but this made the excellent dramatisation by Michael Eaton remain true to the book and allowed me insight into the serial killer’s modus operandi. The first novel in her Alexander Gregory Thrillers series, Impostor, was shortlisted in the British Book Awards 2020: Crime & Thriller Book of the Year. The audiobook of Impostor, narrated by Hugh Dancy, was also selected as a finalist in the New York Festivals Radio Awards, Best Fiction Audiobook of the Year Category. Local lass LJ Ross tops the charts with thriller Cragside". www.morpethherald.co.uk . Retrieved 21 October 2019. Maxwell Finley-Ryan, known simply as ‘Ryan’, is insightful, intelligent and compassionate—both to the living and the dead whom he is tasked to avenge. A born leader, he inspires others to be the best they can be and, more importantly, to hope for the best in others, even in the darkest of times. With an unyielding moral compass and an irreverent sense of humour, he is utterly incorruptible. Where he loves, he loves fiercely. What a terrible waste of time. Nothing at all like expected.enjoyed all previous books by Ross but not this one won't try anymore.

Ryan and Phillips make great partners and I love the banter between both. There is something about the pair that just make them so endearing as characters. I know that probably sounds weird but it’s like Columbo or Poirot and Hastings, they have become much loved characters. Accusations abound in the small, close-knit community, and ‘old’ religions spar against ‘new’ while fear runs like wildfire through the streets. With so many potential motives and countless opportunities, there’s only one man who can help solve this particular mystery…
