Instead we have outlined below a few of the main types of fit found in our ranges and how they compare. This superb torch runs off easily available 4 x AAA alkaline batteries (supplied) and has a lock out mode to stop it accidentally turning on in your pack.

Its brightness memory means that you can turn the light off at a chosen brightness without it reverting back to the default when you switch it back on, and PowerTap function means you can alternate between full strength and dimmed light by tapping the side of the torch, though it is very easy to do this by accident!I’ve been in the market for something a little lighter and less bulky for a while, and the SPOT 400-R definitely fits that bill. These red LEDs provide a diffuse light and do not have an adjustable light output; however, they do have a blinking mode that can be activated in the same manner as the blinking mode for the single power white LEDs. Like any good headlamp, the Storm has multiple settings (six, in fact), and three lenses: one for distance mode, another for proximity mode, and one that you can toggle between red, green, and blue—versus the standard headlamp bright white—to preserve your night vision. The middle of the road output of 250 lumens gives you visibility to around 50-60m; this is comfortably bright enough for walking on clear tracks and trails where obstacles are fewer and the way you're going obvious, making it a good all-round sort of level that'll help conserve power.

The Storm 400 also has three different coloured night vision modes and peripheral white lighting for close-range activities like carefully re-racking for the final summit pitch in the dark. I've been stuck in red LED mode for three minutes before trying all kinds of combinations until I got lucky and the main light turned back on. With a compact body, the Spot 400 features a low profile ergonomic and balanced design for added comfort making it a go-to pick for any pursuit- from midweek dawn patrols to late night cragging sessions, push the daylight. With an IP67 rating, it'll survive submersion to 1m for up to 30 minutes - which should be enough even for Eryri (Snowdonia) in December. Two buttons; one to toggle between lights and another to dim / toggle between the functions could solve everything, but it is what it is. It uses 4 AAA alkaline batteries, but it will readily accept rechargeables and we found lighting performance was even better using the well regarded Panasonic Eneloop AAA NiMH batteries. To add insult to injury you can lock it out so an accidental tap of the button doesn't turn it on and drain your battery while in storage; lots of fun figuring out how to get it to turn back on when you need it and it's locked ;-).
