A moving and memorable book... Her writing is contained, clear and as powerful as the changing tides she swims in. She is a talent to watch.' RAFFAELLA BARKER The Tidal Year is some of the best writing on wild swimming that I have encountered.' MARIANNE LEVY

The Tidal Year is a true story about the healing power of wild swimming and the space it creates for reflection, rewilding, and hope. An exploration of grief in the modern age, it's also a tale of loss, love, female rage and sisterhood.Wind direction and strength can often change during the day. The relative direction of the wind at two different beaches will vary depending on which direction the beaches face. Height of waves offshore Unlike solar and wind energy, tidal movements are reliably constant. Every day that are two high tides and two low tides that can be used to generate electricity. It's also a renewable, sustainable source of energy. It needs no fuel, and produces no by-products or pollution. So, what's the catch? Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in oceans. Tides are caused by the interaction between the Moon, Sun and Earth. This is the average number of seconds between the crest (top) of one wave and the crest of the next, 1-2 miles out to sea. Waves vary in frequency, so we use a standard measure known as ‘peak period’, which represents the time between the most powerful waves. The arrow shows the average direction that the waves are going 1-2 miles out to sea. It indicates how sheltered the beach will be from these waves. Waves vary in direction, so we use ‘mean direction’. This represents an average weighted toward the most energetic waves.

The relative wind direction indicates sea conditions at the beach. It also helps to show which beaches are most likely to be sheltered from the wind. Geography also affects the tidal range. Looking at tide tables for all of Britain, it's clear that the height of the tide varies around the country. For example the spring tidal range at Avonmouth is 12.2 m while at Lowestoft it's only 1.9 m. Tides change in height – low water level and high water level vary throughout the month. The tides build up to a maximum and fall to a minimum twice a month. The tides with the biggest difference between high and low water are called springs and those with the smallest are called neaps. The tide rises and falls much more slowly around low and high tide than in the hours either side of mid-tide. The area of beach covered by the tide can change very fast from shortly after low tide up to an hour before high tide. At some beaches, being aware of tide times and height is very important to avoid the risk of being stranded by the incoming tide. But perhaps the most remarkable chart story of the year was Lizzo, whose “Truth Hurts” — released in the fall of 2017, mind you — hit seven weeks at No. 1 of the Hot 100, tying Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” as the only single by a female rapper to do so. And then there was Billie Eilish, with an album ( When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?) and single ( “Bad Guy”) holding down the top spot. As if her fever-dream music, fashion sense and persona haven’t already proven that a new pop generation has arrived, Billie is the first artist born in the 21st century to have a No. 1 hit. Feel old? In other live-electronic highlights, Aphex Twin triumphed at Coachella, giving his first performance at the festival in over a decade. A couple days prior, he’d returned to New York City for his first booking there since the 1990s, at the Brooklyn venue Avant Gardner. Sadly, 2019 also brought the shuttering of theRed Bull Music Academy, whose concerts, journalism, panels and other programming were a coup to electronic music and agreat many other genres. The tide times tell you what time the water will be at its highest point (high tide) and at its lowest point (low tide).

Four months after Homecoming debuted, Netflix began streaming Look Mom I Can Fly, an intimate account of Travis Scott’s ascent, directed by self-taught filmmaker-to-the-stars White Trash Tyler. All of which leads us to ask if a burgeoning age of game-changing Netflix-produced hip-hop and R&B docs is upon us. The Tidal Year is a true story about the healing power of wild swimming and the space it creates for reflection, rewilding, and hope. An exploration of grief in the modern age, it’s also a tale of loss, love, female rage and sisterhood. The difference between the height of waves offshore and the expected surf height at the beach is determined by 3 things:The Wu-Tang Clan told their story in two ambitious film projects: A documentary, Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men, premiered on Showtime in May; and a dramatized miniseries, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, came out in September via HULU. Also upholding heritage hip-hop values were Little Brother, who released their first studio album in nine years, May the Lord Watch. And yes, the UBN network is broadcasting once again.

The earth isn't fixed rigidly in space, and as the moon orbits, it attracts the earth round in a monthly orbit of its own. So the earth has a small orbit caused by the moon in addition to its annual one round the sun. It is the gravitational pull of the moon on the earth which keeps the earth in its monthly orbit. The wind directions you can see are relative to the direction the shoreline of the beach faces. The arrow shows the compass direction of the wind (where up is north). If the arrow points from sea to land, the wind will be blowing from sea to land (‘onshore’). If the arrow points from land to sea, the wind will be blowing out to sea (‘offshore’). If the arrow points somewhere between the land and the sea, the wind will be blowing across the length of the beach (‘cross-shore’). If the offshore waves are directed away from the beach and have a short wave period (less than 6 seconds) then the wave height at a flat beach is likely to be smaller than the height of the waves offshore.Take a plunge into this tender exploration of grief, rage, love, loss and sisterhood in the modern age. Wave period indicates how many waves you might experience in a set time. For example, if you waded at the beach for 15 minutes when the period was 6 seconds, you might have to jump over 150 waves! Two “live” sets, spread over a day, from the enigmatic super-DJ Marshmello, performed in the astonishingly popular virtual world of Fortnite? What more could a Gen-Z’er ask for?
