I’ve covered which adapters work and don’t work in my Native USB Booting Guide as well as my old “workaround” SD + SSD method guide and over the years people have submitted hundreds of comments about which adapters do and don’t work. For solid state storage older models of solid state drives (SSDs) are also known to draw more power than their newer counterparts. If you have a drive that you think may fall into this category then definitely be on the lookout for power related issues and extra cautious about your power setup. High end “extreme” performance models also tend to draw more power ( Samsung 970 NVMe drives* are some of the fastest in the world but also pretty power hungry for the Pi). Insufficient Power Symptoms Interface – There are two common interfaces found in the market: IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) and SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment). SATA is more common than the IDE enclosures because they give better performance with large memory cache and higher overall transfer speed.

The drive works well with Windows, Mac and Linux OS. The cable has an LED light indicator to indicate the drive status. A transfer rate of 10 Gbps is supported which is limited to 6Gbps by SATA protocol. Better performance can be achieved by connecting it to a USB 3.1 port. Our TakeFor this to be possible, the USB to SATA adapter has to be equipped with an additional 12 V input port for power in which you can plug the AC/DC power adapter cable. Some manufacturers may even include the power adapter into the kit. There are a few different considerations and tradeoffs you need to weigh when you’re choosing a storage adapter/enclosure as well as the drive itself. The main considerations are: The new USB-C 3.1 Type A version of the Sabrent adapter is reported as working in the comments by UEF. DO NOT get the USB 3.0 version as that one is below on the naughty list and won’t work!

One thing to note is that due to its small size, the IDE connector is placed very close to the 4-pin power supply. As a result, a lot of consumers faced trouble while trying to connect old IDE disks to this adapter. 5. UGreen SATA to USB-C Adapter If you have a SATA/IDE to USB adapter, you can remove the old drive from the laptop, install the new drive, install Windows on it, and then connect the failed old drive as a temporary external drive. Maybe, you are interested in this post – SATA vs. IDE: What Is the Difference. Benefits: Lightweight, Compatible with Windows and Mac, Supports 7mm / 9.5mm 2.5 inch SATA hard driveAll SATA hard drives need electrical power to spin. Its amount depends on the size of the drive. A more compact 2.5-inch laptop version consumes less and can be powered solely by a USB port. The 3.5-inch hard drives intended for desktop PCs require more electricity. That is why they have to be connected to an external power supply, like an AC/DC power adapter. Benefits: Compatible with Windows, Linux, and Mac, Supports 7mm/9.5mm 2.5 inch SATA I/II/III HDD and SSD up to 4TB

The communication between these two interfaces can be achieved via a special USB to SATA adapter. Its USB side is plugged into the computer’s USB port, and the SATA side is attached to the drive. Such adapters are relatively inexpensive, and it is possible to find USB 3.0 and higher options. Yet, it must be noted that, besides the speed, they have some other limitations. Most of them do not support drives whose capacity exceeds 2 TB. Only some USB 3.0 and higher variants do work with drives up to 6 TB, this information should be available in their specifications. Plug one end into the USB port and the other end into the serial port, and it will work normally. No need to install it. The cable transfers files at a rate of 10 gigabits per second. It is suitable for 2.5 inch hard drives and SSDs. There is a dark light on the connector, which will flash when data is being transmitted. As for the ” ORICO M2PV USB C 3.2 aluminium case for M2 SSD NVME” devices, I can confirm that it does NOT work reliably on a Raspberry 4B and I would not recommend it to anyone with this setup. There is a quite long thread here about the issues with “RTL9210” chipset. If you are using a powerful NVMe drive/enclosure combo like the ICY BOX with a high performance Samsung NVMe drive even with the extra 500 mA it will still not even boot. I have had these oversized adapters and they are great but for a very powerful drive/adapter combination you are going to need more than 500 mA. Morgon reports not working in the comments — I also recognize this adapter as the “fake” StarTech adapter that is sold on AliExpress, thanks Morgon! StarTech is known for making reliable products for IT professionals. Adding to the list of pros, the company offers a two-year warranty on the adapter. As such, the unit is one of the best SATA to USB Adapters out there. 2. Unitek IDE and SATA to USB Apapter Make absolutely sure it’s the 10Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 2 version. There is another one that looks identical that is a USB 3.1 Gen 2 6Gbps that will not work. Confirmed working by RRT in the comments.

To this day it can still be treacherous to buy a storage adapter for your Raspberry Pi 4. There are many that will not work properly and perform very poorly. Sophisticated enclosures sometimes even add RAID controller to improve storage speed and reliability as a whole, if multiple drives are used. some say, that cases that have “RTL9210B” chip equipped can work ou of the box. Mine has 9210 (w/o A or B).Most types of adapters can be powered by the Pi itself. One notable exception is NVMe enclosures. Throughout the years we have had hundreds of comments from people who had no trouble powering 2.5″ SATA enclosures but couldn’t get a NVMe one to work at all without a powered USB hub. The SATA to USB adapter supports 5 Gbps USB 3.0 data transfer speed, and when you connect to a computer that also supports UASP, you can transfer speeds up to 70% faster than traditional USB 3.0. The hard drive USB adapter is a portable solution that fits well into a laptop bag without the need for an external power supply.
