Description

The mini-LED installed in our variant support DisplayHDR 1000 for the first time in a gaming notebook, alongside Asus' own Zephyrus Duo 16. However, the latter model also offers a matte non-touch variant. The convertible mechanism will be a boon for lots of gamers. Flip the display into a tented or propped-up position and you can use the Asus like a little TV screen and play with a controller. Fully rotate the screen and it’s perfect for touchscreen games on the sofa. The Flow X16 utilises Themeral Grizzly’s liquid metal on the CPU and brand-new Frost Force Technology, which features two fans that direct airflow through precisely calculated cutouts and towards crucial internal components to avoid overheating. There is a third auxiliary fan which also assists with moving heat from the GPU directly into the new Pulsar Heatsink that covers the rear of the machine.

The Ryzen 9 still scores 2000+ points on this profile, roughly 90% of the Turbo/Manual performance, which is definitely impressive for a Silent profile and showcases the AMD platform’s efficiency and capabilities at mid-power settings.Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is used as the dedicated graphics unit, which has access to 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Performance is at a high level thanks to the most powerful variant (125 watt TGP, including Dynamic Boost), which is not necessarily what you would expect from a compact and lightweight 16-inch convertible. While we haven’t been able to test out the display on the Flow X16, Asus claims that the machine passes the new ROG Nebula display certification, which requires 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space, at least 500 nits of brightness and a response time of 3ms or less. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3070 Ti arrives inside the Asus ROG Flow X16 with its usual 8GB of memory and 5888 stream processors, and the GPU runs at its peak power output of 125W. AMD’s Ryzen 9 6900HS CPU has eight multi-threaded cores and a top speed of 4.9GHz,

Here’s what we got on our review unit in terms of battery life, with the screen’s brightness set at around 120 nits (~60 brightness) and on Hybrid mode. Don’t forget this is the IPS screen option and not the miniLED model. On the side, the Flow X16 is also going to be available with the IPS 500-nits panel that we’ve reviewed in the 2022 Zephyrus M16, which is an excellent screen as well. We do know that the GPU can run at up to 125W with Dynamic Boost, but we don’t have the exact settings for combined CPU+GPU power. I would expect 60-80W sustained in CPU loads (update: Jarrod mentions up to 90W on his unit – video down below, but I’m not sure if that’s peak or sustained) and around 140-150W combined, based on what the Zephyrus G15 and M16 are capable of, with whom the Flow X16 shares many design cues. For comparison, the i7 + RTX 3060 140W configuration in one of the best full-size laptops in the year, the Lenovo Legion 5i Pro, ends up within 3-10% faster in the tested games than this Flow X16, while also running significantly noisier on its top profile. That said, you can get more GPU power if you spend extra on a laptop with an RTX 3080 Ti – that core averaged 120fps in Horizon at 1080p, while the Flow managed 87fps. The battery is a mixed bag, too. The X16 didn’t even last an hour when gaming, which is no surprise, but it lasted for more than four hours while working and nearly eight hours while playing media – so if you stay away from games you’ll probably get half a day of use from this rig.
