The story moves at a cracking pace, as do all Mark's books and as a departure from his usual DI Tom Thorne stories, was a success, I am pleased to tell you.

The case sees the heavily-pregnant detective thrown head first in the shady underworld of organised crime in Manchester. As she unveils his secrets, she experiences several surprises about the man she thought she knew so well.Heavner isn’t exactly mollified when Tempe, aided by retired police detective Skinny Slidell and a host of experts, puts a name to the dead man. He's like a pumped-up three year old, having just figured out that not giving his older siblings his candy is a possibility, and he uses it EVERYWHERE. Things are, naturally, not exactly what they appear to be in the town of Polsford and there are soon plenty of suspicious characters coming out of the woodwork in true Broadchurch style. I haven'tl read much crime fiction lately but as I ha d read and enjoyed some of Billingham's DI Tho rne books I thought I would give this stand alone one a go.

Two girls have been abducted, and the man arrested is married to Helen's childhood best friend, Linda. A dangerous quest, one life is wiped out and three more are changed forever: the young man whose finger was on the trigger, the ageing gangster planning a deadly revenge, and the pregnant woman who struggles desperately to uncover the truth. The narrative is split between following Helen or Theo, with occasional other perspectives thrown in. It is forbidden to copy anything for publication elsewhere without written permission from the copyright holder.Americans who think the bleak world George Pelecanos brings to life is limited to the nation's capital will find Billingham's atmospheric maze of London byways just as sprawling and squiggling with desperate cops and robbers.

A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. So he was surprised and more than a little relieved when the Corporation gave the green light to In The Dark, which has Helen Weeks - Thorne's girlfriend and a detective in a different police unit in the books - as the lead for the new BBC venture. He has to prove himself through an initiation rite which involves firing a gun at the first car to be seen without headlights. The only twist I didn't see coming was laughable and had next to nothing to do with the main plot - it's like a part of The Sixth Sense thrown into the book because Twattingham thought "huh, why not". the heroine is conducting an investigation into the death of her boyfriend, but she is constantly saying how ridiculous and nonsensical the investigation is.

In a city where violence can be random or meticulously planned, where teenage gangs clash with career criminals and where loyalty is paid for in blood, nything is possible. Unfortunately for her, travelling in the car are some gang members putting one of their number through an initiation.Starting it off with the crime before backpedalling is Twattingham's first mistake, making us frustrated only fifteen pages into a book.
