While some backpackers are happy to eat freeze-dried food for days on end, for others, the ability to cook a more complicated meal is important.

I bought the BRS-3000T over a year ago mainly for adventure picnicking, but since then it’s been along on quite a few backpacking and kayak camping trips. In previous tests at 8,000 feet, a fan blowing 2-4 mph kept this stove from boiling water in 15 minutes at all. It is only in recent times, with drier summers and occasional fire bans, that meths stoves have been progressively less acceptable to the authorities and others and a switch back to gas stoves is almost a recommendation.Removing the stove from the fuel canister is also difficult as I had to tighten it so much just to get a decent seal in the first place. The biggest factor that will affect the performance and efficiency of the BRS-3000T is windy conditions, because there is very little wind protection around the burner.

Fitting inside a draw-string bag that literally fits within the palm of your hand, the 3000T sets a precedent of how small a camping stove can be. Fortunately most canister stoves like the BRS-3000T can be used with any brand of canister including Jetboil, MSR, Snow Peak, Optimus and other brands. Their titanium Siphon has its faults, but these are mostly balanced out by simplicity, small size, light weight, robustness and performance.If you’re worried about holding your hand too close, you can always purchase a lighter with a longer handle. If you must use something, I prefer to use my surroundings first, and as a last resort I’ll use a piece of very thick carbon fiber felt.

I have not used this little stove on many multi-day hikes and nothing over a week or so, but am well aware that many hikers have used one of these stoves for months on end with no problems other than struggling to work with it in windier conditions. And when you have the right product, you’re a little bit happier which affects the people around you! I would do a test run on high for at least 15 minutes with the maximum amount of water in the pot that you plan to boil on your Alaska trip. I also would not use it for heating a larger pot of water, like 1-2 liters (I have an MSR PocketRocket for that).

It was used every day, several times a day, for both weeks, mostly to make cups of tea and instant noodles.
