Description

Text from the original publication of the poem in the Troy Sentinel, with the spellings "Dunder" and "Blixem." The Moore house, Chelsea, at the time a country estate, gave its name to the surrounding neighborhood of Chelsea, Manhattan, and Moore's land in the area is noted today by Clement Clark Moore Park, located at 10th Avenue and 22nd Street. The playground there opened November 22, 1968, and it was named in memory of Clement Clarke Moore by local law during the following year. The 1995 renovations to Clement Clarke Moore Park included a new perimeter fence, modular play equipment, safety surfacing, pavements and transplanted trees. This park is a popular playground area for local residents, who gather there the last Sunday of Advent for a reading of Twas the Night Before Christmas. [2] Siefker, Phyllis (1997). Santa Claus, Last of the Wild Men. McFarland & Company. p.4. ISBN 0-7864-0246-6.

So get your seasonal beverage of choice, cozy up by the fire, and get down with some goofy Gogol. It is a charming little read with a happy ending and it will make the season bright. Patterson, Samuel White (1956). The poet of Christmas Eve: a life of Clement Clarke Moore, 1779–1863. New York: Morehouse-Gorham Co. I have said it from memory to my kids and maybe one grandkid, though now whole swatches of it have washed down the drain with other hurricane detritus.Moore’s template for the Santa that he drew through his poetry soon replaced the centuries old characteristic depictions of St. Nicholas of Europe. The poem also influenced the ideas of Christmas Eve gifting and is believed to have popularized the concept of Santa visiting homes on Christmas Eve bearing gifts in America. Sarah Bryan Miller. "Long saga behind composer's Christmas cantata". St. Louis Post Dispatch. 1 December 2017.

It's strange how little it resembles the satanism and the consumerism of the (TM) Santa we've all grown to love and enjoy with our Coke, no? Do you think I'm joking? We've gotta have a roll call of ALL the sins before they can all be signed off. This is a GLORIOUS tribute to a truly Russian Xmas. It's not hard to find the devil if he rides on your shoulder! The poem is read or recited in numerous Christmas films, including Prancer (1989), National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989), The Santa Clause (1994), Reindeer Games (2000), and Falling for Christmas (2016). [41] It also inspired the 2001 film 'Twas the Night and two television specials called 'Twas the Night Before Christmas made in 1974 and 1977 respectively. The Christmas Book: The Night Before Christmas; Christmas Day; and, The Day After Christmas. Illustrated by G. A. Davis The poetry was soon reprinted in many newspapers and magazines and was also adapted for many musical renderings.

a b c d Burrows, Edwin G.& Wallace, Mike. Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898. New York: Oxford University Press, 1999. pp. 462–63 ISBN 0-19-511634-8 The Night Before Christmas”—the first story in the second volume of Gogol’s Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka (1832)—is one of the author’s Ukrainian stories in which the supernatural element is strong, and I believe that it is precisely these stories which constitute his best early work. Of all of them, though, this tale of Christmas Eve is my favorite. Totally different book than American writer, "Clement C. Moore's" "The Night Before Christmas". Moore's book is all "visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads" while Gogol's book has the devil running amok on the night before Christmas.

This isn't really a short story or a novella, so better described with a term I dislike, a novelette; satisfyingly darker than the other Christmas novelette haunting the media at the moment Keegan's Small Things Like These. Literary history [ edit ] Clement Clarke Moore, the author of A Visit from St. Nicholas The original publication of Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas in the Troy Sentinel, 23 December 1823Volviendo a Gógol, sigo sosteniendo que pertenece a esa elite de los escritores más completos que han existido como Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde, Gustave Flaubert o Albert Camus, sólo por nombrar algunos.
