Second, it can cause algae blooms that deplete oxygen levels in the water and make it difficult for fish and other aquatic creatures to breathe. A consequence of few plants in your pond is less oxygenation. To combat this, you will likely need to ensure your pond is using an electric pump or some other kind of water feature. What this will do is aerate the water in your pond and make sure that enough oxygen is available to prevent your water from stagnating.

Find a shallow container such as a heavy saucer and fill it with stones or sea glass so bees and butterflies have somewhere to safely land and take a cool, refreshing drink. 24. Transform Plant Pots into Ponds This raised pond might seem small, but it’s enough to attract all kinds of flying insects and birds to your home. It’s the perfect pond solution for urban areas and new builds. 26. Go Big for a Real Statement A birdbath is a great place to start if you don’t want to commit to a pond straight away, but a ground-level water source will allow hedgehogs, voles, and toads to join the party. As rosemary is native to the Mediterranean, it prefers dry soils. In fact, rosemary is a popularly utilized plant in xeriscaping, otherwise known as landscaping and gardening in arid regions. This makes rosemary a perfect plant for your pond garden if you live in an arid location, such as the southwestern United States or drier parts of Eurasia.Pond dye can be used in smaller ponds as well, but be advised, you’ll want to find a product specifically suited to smaller ponds. Don’t use a large pond product in a small pond as they’re often too concentrated.

Plants with tall stems for emerging larvae–such as water iris ( Iris ensata). Thelarvae ofdamselflies and dragonfliesneed stems like thistocrawl up when they’re ready to leave the pond and turn into adults. Kookaburra sail shades are available in many colours and different shapes and sizes. Over 500 sail shades to choose from. They’re rot proof and easy to clean. Most sails come with sturdy grade 304 stainless steel rings in each corner for lasting quality and durability. They are easy to hang and install, one way to transform your patio space in an instant.

Ponds with more shade are far less likely to become overgrown with algae and are more likely to maintain a cooler temperature. Rain is good for your pond because it’s a natural source of soft water without the addition of chemicals such as chlorine or fluoride like tap water. This kind of water also has the benefit of not negatively affecting the pH levels of your pond. According to Nualgi Ponds, a healthy pH level range of between 6.5 and 9.0 is ideal to support most fish and plants.

Like many ferns, mosquito fern does fantastically when placed in the shade and will be bright green; if planted in the sun, it will still grow well but its leaves tend to turn a more purple or red hue. It’s found naturally in moist woodlands where it has access to sun or partial shade with a couple of hours of sunlight. It grows well in slow-moving or still water, such as that of streams and ponds, where it can stretch out over the water and even trail over waterfalls. It’s able to double its area in just a couple of years. As such, fairy moss will need to be manually thinned out every two to three years. Cinnamon fern is readily found in the rich, moist soils along the shaded edges of streams, rivers, and bogs, as well as damp woodlands and shade pond and lake edges with rich soil. When grown in zones 3 through 10 with ample shade, moisture, and semi-acidic soil with a pH of 4.5 to 7.5, this fern will return year after year. Cinnamon fern can be grown in a couple inches of water if desired, but does best in moist soils. Shady ponds also encourage cooler temperatures throughout the day. Cooler temperatures actually increase the levels of oxygen in your pond’s water which can counter some of the effects of having fewer oxygen producing plants present. Clear any stones, roots or debris from the hole. Tamp down the soil firmly, then line the hole with pond underlay or a 5cm (2in) layer of damp sandOne of the biggest worries when making a wildlife pool is maintenance; remember it is a haven for wildlife and should not be squeaky clean. The water will cloud over from time to time and you will get over-invasive plants which seem to come from nowhere. I would suggest gentle editing is required to keep the balance right and in time rich oxygen producing plants such as Canadian pond weed will help keep even the murkiest of waters clear. Create adjacent habitat– apond doesn’t just work in isolation, it’s part of a network of habitats around your garden. Help wildlife move between these areas by letting grass grow along one edge of the pond (tall grass gives perfect cover for young toads and frogs leaving the pond), growing some denser shrubs nearby(so birds can approach the pond safely, with cover from predators such as sparrowhawks) and keeping at least one section of the pond edge open and sunny to allow for basking reptiles such as grass snakes. Alternatively, you can simply place them in large, colorful pots for greater ease and some added color and pond garden decoration! Actually I was just showing you trees that I have that you could use to shade your pond but the way my pond sits the little maple is on the north side of the pond and those other small evergreen trees are on the south side of the pond and they only shade it a tiny bit and when the sun is high in the Summer there is not much shade at all there. We don't really need shade here as our weather does not get hot here hardly ever. Yes if you had any trees that lose their leaves near your pond they are going to get into your pond especially depending on which way the wind blows them. I am somewhat fortunate that the little Maple's leaves get blown away from the pond towards the front porch. Some get into the pond tho and I just scoop them out. My little maple won't get much taller but it will tend to get wider but I trim it underneath and on the lower branches to keep it from getting too wide and hanging too low. I like to keep it kind of airy so you can see light through the branches as they look prettier that way. Never prune them too much tho as to open up the trunk part that faces south or it could burn the trunk...........that's what the radio garden guy says here anyways. He also says he likes to prune his so that it looks as tho a bird could fly through the branches, lol!

Water lettuce, so named for its resemblance to lettuce as it floats atop the water, is a natural water purifier and helps to keep algae at bay. Though it can be planted in full sun, water lettuce is quite prone to its leaves getting sunburned if you live in an area that is hot or has intense sun. Particularly if you live in zone 8 or above, water lettuce does best with partial to full shade and indirect light. Sun is tolerated best by water lettuce in the morning hours when it’s less intense, so plant where midday and afternoon shade is available. In reality, green water (and sun exposure) can affect any size of pond. Large ponds that have the problem tend to be a bit more shallow, and they may have some stagnant water conditions. Large bodies of water can obviously be more challenging to shade than a small one, and about the best tool we have for that is pond dyes or tints. Although they may not be suitable for small ponds with shallow water, they work great for ponds with at least 3ft+ of water depth. If you have pond plants that require plenty of sunlight and you don’t like the idea of a shade sail, a shelter should provide your fish enough UV protection to cool down when needed. This is important in hot climates where a place to cool off is a necessary requirement. But in the UK we tend to have more temperamental weather - a little colder and a lot wetter - which inspired Kookaburra to create a different type of sail shade. Finally, sunlight can also cause evaporation, which can lead to lower water levels in ponds. All of these factors can have a negative impact o n pond ecosystems. ConclusionThis is especially important for a shady pond if the source of the shade is a tree or bush to begin with. Any nearby trees will regularly deposit debris into the pond which will eventually decay and lead to an excess of nutrients which will inevitably lead to algae and murky, cloudy water. Use pond pots in several areas of the garden to provide habitats for dragonflies and water for birds and pollinators. All ponds should be at least 38cm (15in) deep, otherwise they can overheat easily in summer, leading to algae anddeoxygenation, which can harm fish or other pondlife, and the water would be more likely to freeze in winter. If you only have space for a small pond, make sure at least part of it is deep. Plants are probably my #1 favorite addition to a pond to provide some shading, namely because they also provide the added benefit of nutrient reduction too. Anything that can help out-compete the algae in some way is a good thing. Look for floating plants like lilies and lotus, or anything that can cover some of the surface.
