Description

Wood preserver is basically an undercoat. You brush or spray it onto raw, freshly sawn or sanded wood surfaces to stabilise the wood’s moisture content and protect it from rot and decay. Copper green cannot be used as stain to the wood. The green colour of the wood shall eventually fade within a few months if continuously exposed to sunlight. For this reason, oil paints can be applied after drying of copper green treatment.

5 LITRE HOLLY GREEN WOOD PROTECTIVE TREATMENT BARRETTINE

For use on bare wood which will be over-coated, for example with Barrettine Log Cabin Treatment or opaque paint, or physically protected from the elements. It provides protection from termites, carpenter ants and powder post beetles as well as mold, mildew and stain fungi.Make certain the wood is free of bark, then immerse in product for 12 to 48 hours or until the sapwood is completely penetrated.

So, you can potentially use it on your old shed, but you should prepare the wood first. Otherwise you’re wasting your time and money. What is the difference between Barrettine Wood Preserver, Wood Protective Treatment and Universal Preserver?

Most wood preserver is a clear liquid that darkens the wood’s natural colour, but you can also get wood preserver that contains coloured dye, so it stains at the same time as protecting. Whether you go for clear or coloured is a matter of taste. Fence posts and poles should be devoid of barks and dry. Fence posts along with heavy duty wood products should be immersed in the copper green solution for 12-48 hours for effective protection against insects and fungi. Water-based wood preservers such as Cuprinol tend to be easier for most people to work with. They dry faster than most solvent-based preservers, and are much lower in VOCs (volatile organic compounds), the substances mainly responsible for petrol-type smells. Water-based products are also much easier to clean off brushes. Other compounds such as copper azoles, alkaline copper quaternary, micronized copper came in the market as an upgrade to the copper green. Divide the total square footage by 100. One gallon will cover approximately 100-300 sq. ft., depending on wood age and species, surface porosity and method of application. Rough or weathered surfaces will absorb more.

Like paint, wood preservers come in solvent-based and water-based varieties. Each type has advantages and disadvantages. It should be noted that the above products are preventative treatments and these products are unlikely to kill/control mould spores already present within the wood. If this is suspected, Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner should be used, prior to coating the wood. The bottom of wooden structures e.g. sheds will also require more frequent treatment with Mould and Mildew Cleaner, as the action of rain splashing on the ground will distribute mould spores onto the wood. Frequent treatment with Mould and Mildew Cleaner can prolong the life of the wood coating. Also, repeat and periodic re-treatments using the above wood care products will enhance and protect the appearance, and prolong the life of the wood. Our main complaint is that there’s no clear version, so you have to choose a colour – and the waterproof finish is difficult to paint over if you don’t like the shade. The six colours are lovely, though, and include Forest Oak, Autumn Gold and Silver Copse. Protects against rot and decay by inhibiting mold, mildew, and staining fungus growth on the wood surface. Compatible with many products both water- and solvent-based. Compatibility with any additional coating should always be confirmed by a test patch.
