Description

For its part, Wilson has employees working inside Foremost to, in part, oversee the quality of the product. That’s also a relatively common story among brands who do a high volume through Foremost (and other factories). We’ll have a better sense of to what degree those efforts are successful after we’ve run the Staff Model R through our Ball Lab. As its name might suggest, the Wilson Duo Soft+ is the softest golf ball in the current Wilson range. In fact, its compression rating of 35 is among the lowest of any golf ball that’s been manufactured in recent years. The Duo Soft+ features a two-piece construction and a surlyn cover. That said, while surlyn is significantly less responsive than urethane, which is also far more expensive, the Duo Soft+ provides better greenside control than what players might normally expect from a two-piece ball. The Wilson Staff and Staff Model R both measured 99 on our gauge. That makes it among the firmest balls in our database. You’re certainly not going to mistake it for the DUO but it should be appreciably faster, especially for higher swing speed golfers. The bottom line: both the Staff Model and Staff Model R easily qualify as Tour-level compression and then some. Wilson Staff Model / Staff Model R – Diameter and Weight If you’re looking for more spin, however, the Staff R appears to be a legitimate option to deliver just that.

Spin & Control With 4 Layers More Layers -Increased spin. Better command. Off the tee, unrivalled distance and shot shaping. On the fairways, it's possible to work like a pro. The stability ofapproach approaches is predictable, and control around the green is superb. This low-compression Wilson ball promises extreme distance through a hard ionomer cover material that optimizes trajectory for maximum yardage and roll. And from our testing, we can vouch that this ball certainly delivers. The enhanced aerodynamic dimple pattern really does add to the power potential from the tee and we were so impressed by its distances that we have included it in our best distance golf balls guide.Urethane-covered balls offer the best spin control and feel but do cost more. Experiment with each to see if you notice enough of a difference to justify the extra cost, or whether the best mid-price golf balls might be an option. The performance piece is intriguing, though not in a way that works for me. I’m a high-spin guy, so any ball that can deliver on a promise of more spin throughout the bag isn’t going to ideal for me. Under our weight classification system, the Staff Model falls in the average range while the Staff Model R is small. Where weight is concerned, the Staff Model is again within the average range while the staff Model R is light. Wilson Staff Model / Staff Model R Inspection For those of you unfamiliar with the golf ball manufacturing process, understand that Wilson’s new approach is unusual, to say the least. The ball is painted (usually white). It’s then stamped (logos, player numbers, geometric patterns, etc.), and, finally, a protective clear coat is applied to give the ball a glossy look and protect against scratches and scuffing.

For Staff Model, Wilson implemented a finely controlled paint application process. The result is a more uniform coat of paint that translates to more consistent performance and supreme shot-making confidence. Another urethane 4-piece ball very much the same as the Staff Model R. The obvious difference is that this ball is painted, albeit with "a finely controlled application process that ensures every urethane ball leaves the factory with a near-flawless finish". Finished with a modern Staff Model stamp, the all-new premium ball joins the Staff Model family of products designed for elite golfers. Shop the new Staff Model ball here. Without the protective layers, numbers and logos are likely going to wear and stains from grass and dirt are going to impregnate the urethane. Whether that means the ball looks unpleasantly dirty or, as Wilson suggests, will develop a cool patina, is entirely golfer dependent.Wilson has also implemented its new V-COR construction to create a core that delivers increased velocity and distance gains through the bag. Additionally, a proprietary painting process ensures the finish on each ball is perfect and that every Staff Model ball performs as intended on the course. Finally, it comes with a seamless 362-dimple pattern which helps to produce a flatter, more controlled trajectory, which makes the Wilson Staff Model an excellent option for golfers who often find themselves playing in windy conditions. One is clearly 'better' than the other and that is reflected by the difference in price and the immense popularity of one of those balls. Where things can get confusing is that for many golfers the better ball is not the expensive one that is played by so many players on the PGA Tour, it's the cheap 2-piece ball. The durability chapter of our Wilson Staff Model R story is interesting. To some degree, paint and clear coat exists to protect the ball but neither is essential to the design of a golf ball.

Since those humble beginnings, our endeavour has blossomed into a robust and trusted online retailer, representing the leading brands in the golf industry. We take immense pride in being your go-to destination for all things golf! An advanced core (V-COR) also magnifies energy around the centre of the ball, generating maximum velocity for greater distance. We’ve also used a urethane cover that features a seamless 362-dimple pattern, to smooth airflow around the ball, for a lower flight trajectory” he added. 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie on why he switched to the Wilson Staff Model golf ball It’s only with short iron approach shots where this ball’s shortcomings are noticeable, and even then it won’t be too obvious for most players. When you’re hitting an 8 or 9 iron into a green you would ideally want a little bit more feel and spin than you get from the DUO, but all things considered this is a great golf ball.

Wilson Staff Model R Versus the Competition

Welcome to The Golf Shop Online, where our passion for golf drives us to provide you with an exceptional shopping experience! Staff Model R is unpainted as the dimple cross-section geometry, and the pattern of dimples on a golf ball are critical aerodynamic elements that affect the flight performance of the ball in terms of trajectory, distance, and directional stability. These dimples are a mere 0.004-0.007 inches deep and super sensitive to the level of paint on the ball,” said Bob Thurman, Vice President, Wilson Labs. More layers. Higher spin. Better control. Unmatched distance and shot-shaping off the tee. Tour-level workability on the fairways. Predictable stability on approach shots and exceptional control around the green. I was getting punchy, and consistent distance from my 7 iron, consistent with the variable CHS I was producing Wilson market this ball as having “tour level distance optimised by a low-spinning trajectory off the tee” as well as "maximum greenside spin that delivers unparalleled stopping power".

The bottom line is that the Wilson Staff Model R, anecdotally anyway, appears to live up to the lower-launch, higher-spin billing. Unfortunately, that also means it’s not a particularly good fit for me. With the Wilson Staff Model R, Wilson skips steps 1 and 3 entirely. Seams are polished, the raw balls are stamped, boxed and (Shimmy Shimmy Ya) shipped to retailers. It’s a unique approach to the market which is exactly the route smaller brands like Wilson need to take to capture attention. About the Wilson Staff Model and Staff Model R That’s exactly what we found as the Staff Model R was ever-so-slightly lighter on average despite six balls in the sample that were the heaviest across both models. Similarly, the Staff Model R proved a bit smaller overall though, again, six balls in the sample were among the largest across both models.I’ve actually done a head to head comparison of the Wilson Staff Model and the Staff Model R. I drew the same conclusions as the author. Now, the regular staff Model was good enough for me to switch from ProV1’s to the year’s Wilson ball. For me, (3-handicap) it had similar playing characteristics of the slightly older ProV1x models with higher launch and lower spin. I wish My Golf Spy would have included some playing or testing observations on their write-up on that ball in April. It really is a great ball. Using the Wilson Staff R over the course of a round, I was able to get some sense of both performance and durability.
