But if money is tight (or you'd prefer to spend your hard-earned on something more fun than dishwashing liquid), then the Aldi alternative is a winner. Produces lots of bubbles, even after adding oil. For egg, 15 seconds is not enough but a 25 second soak and it comes off with a bit of abrasion. With Weetabix it does well, just needed a little finishing with the scourer to get the last hardened bits off. The dried, clean plates are faintly musty, but shiny, with a few bubble marks. Dirty dishes piling up? Washing up is the chore we do most often. Few of us go through a day without squeezing a bottle of washing-up detergent into the sink; even if there’s a dishwasher for the plates and mugs, some things just make more sense to clean by hand. But most importantly, it’s better for your health. Most mainstream formulas contain the chemical sodium laureth sulphate (SLS), which causes foam and strengthens the cleaning process. However, it’s also an irritant, so it’s best to get it all off before eating from your plates. What happens if you put washing up liquid in the dishwasher? Close second: Aldi's Tandil Ultra Power Soak N' Clean gave the more expensive product a run for its money. Clean winner? How the top two compareIn our testing, both liquids received excellent scores for their ability to remove grime from dirty dishes. Their 'scrub test' scores were: An apple smell and nifty bottle, producing lovely shiny dry plates, but at this price I’d expect it to perform better than cheaper options and it doesn’t. As for “4 x less scrubbing”, it took an age to shift Weetabix. Even after decades of use, Morning Fresh continues to be the most trusted dishwashing liquid on the market. Thanks to its unique blend of natural ingredients and advanced cleaning technologies, you can rest assured that your dishes will sparkle. Plus, our easy-to-use bottle design makes it simple to get started when it's time for those tough cleaning tasks

Smells of lemon fruit pastilles, but I miss the green colouring which masks the dirty water better. The egg plate needs 25 seconds in the water and a bit of a scrub; for dried-on Weetabix the plate needed a bit of elbow grease but did the job. A faint “meaty” smell on the clean plates, which aren’t that shiny. Lovely citrus-floral smell in a bright green bowlful – like smelling a glass of orange juice by a vase of daffodils. Does well to clean the plates with minimum scrubbing, drying bright and shiny.

This basically means that you'd need to scrub just a little harder with the Aldi dishwashing liquid to get the same result as with the Morning Fresh liquid. Small price to pay for such a big saving, surely? However, if you would like to wash those dishes yourself then grab the longer-lasting Persil Washing Up Liquid. The 500ml bottle is tough on stains and its superior cleaning action leaves behind a lovely scent of lemon. Sponge Scourers 10pk - 49p Amphoteric surfactants, such as betaines, can be anionic or cationic, and are the mildest surfactant, often used in baby shampoo. They also combine with anionic surfactants, making them less likely to irritate skin, and work well in hard water.

However, detergents are mostly made using petrochemicals, and some degrade much more readily than others. Eco brands generally use plant-based detergents, or at least ones which break down speedily and harmlessly – that said, there is little regulation, so it is worth scrutinising the claims made. Test conditions A faintly citrus smell but otherwise nondescript. After a 45-second soak the egg plate still needs a good scrub; the Weetabix-caked plate needs a good 10-second scrub. With 1 tbsp oil added to the water the clean plates have a whiff of oil and they dry distinctly smeary. Ideally, yes. Nobody wants the lingering taste of soap in their Sunday roast, and leftover washing up liquid can leave unattractive smears on glass. Non-ionic surfactants, such as cocamide, alkyl polyglycosides, and ethoxylates, are better with oil and organic dirt and good in hard water – plus they are less likely than anionic surfactants to cause skin irritation. When your dishwater turns cloudy, it’s down to the non-ionic surfactants. The GHI team put 24 brands of washing up liquid through two rigorous tests. Firstly, they counted how many greasy plates one manufacturer-recommended dose could bring to a clean finish.

Anionic (negatively charged) surfactants, which include sulfates, sulfonates, and gluconates. They are the most commonly used surfactant, and are great for “particulate soil” (bitty dirt) but not so good with oil. Most of us use more washing up liquid than we need to, which wastes money, time and water (as rinsing takes longer). The recommended dose varies between brands, but you shouldn’t need more than 5ml (1.5 teaspoons or a couple of squirts) of non-concentrated formula per five litres of water. We originally started testing dishwashing liquids based on the industry standard that looked at how long their foam lasts. But we soon realised that manufacturers were using cleaning agents (surfactants) that were better at creating foam rather than those that were better at removing grease. (This was because many consumers assume that more foam means better cleaning performance.) Pale but effective; on Weetabix it’s impressive, needs just a bit of a scrub to come up clean. Egg needs 25 seconds and a bit of firm cloth action. Plates clean to a nice shine but dry with lots of drip marks and some grease.

Morning Fresh is a premium washing-up liquid that costs three times as much as Aldi's Tandil Ultra. But is it worth it?

For nearly 40 years, Morning Fresh has been one of the leading washing up liquids worldwide. Our superior grease cutting power and performance make it the ideal product to clean dishes safely and effectively. Just one squirt will leave your dishes sparkling and fresh every time Please note that parcels weighing over 2kg may be sent via courier due to Royal Mail weight restrictions. We use a scrub test and a foam test (see 'How we test' below) because they both play a part in getting your dishes clean. Foam (or 'general detergency' in technical terms) helps prevent food scraps from being redistributed on your plates once you've washed them, but it doesn't actually remove the grime in the first place. The scrub test shows how well the detergent removes grime from your dishes – the most important aspect of dishwashing liquid. Too late? Stop the dishwasher. Lay down towels to soak up all those suds and thoroughly clean out the dispenser to remove any trace of washing up liquid. If the foam still isn’t disappearing, pour a mug of white vinegar inside your machine to help banish those bubbles. Run a couple of cycles until it’s fully clean and dry. How we test washing up liquid Made with 25% waste ingredients leftover from a beer brewing process – is there anything booze can’t do? – this fragrance-free, planet-friendly washer is top of the list.
