Description

Words are at a minimum in Totoro, which features numerous passages defined by silence and stasis. Many of the shots resemble still-life paintings, except they’re never really still, like the butterfly that circles lazily around Mei and Totoro during their nap—a 10-second cameo that feels like a benediction. The film’s world exists in a state of lush, perpetual discovery; the color palette runs from deep, primal greens to translucent watercolors. Everywhere we look, the man-made structures are either modest or creaky and dilapidated. When My Neighbor Totoro was released in 1988, it showed on double bills with Isao Takahata’s astonishing and nightmarish animated drama Grave of the Fireflies, which visualizes the bombing of Kobe in grim detail; where Takahata’s film depicts a broken postwar hell, Miyazaki’s vision keeps modernity at bay, somehow existing simultaneously within a country’s history and traditions and strangely out of time. Little Mei finds the first baby totoro, which looks like a bunny, scurrying around their yard, and follows it into the forest. Her father, home alone and absorbed in his work, doesn't notice her absence. The baby leads her down a leafy green tunnel and then there's a soft landing on the stomach of a vast slumbering creature. Miyazaki doesn't exploit cliches about the dark and fearsome forest; when Setsuki and her father go looking for Mei, they find her without much trouble--sleeping on the ground, for the totoro has disappeared. Plenty of these will be perfect for children! Especially the ones where Totoro is holding a prop. Children can replay the scenes from the movie that they enjoyed. It’ll help to ignite their imagination! Selection Criteria

For most of the movie, this was Totoro. As you can see from the Japanese theatrical poster, and from the image above, the setting of the scene is actually kind of scary. It's a dark, rainy night; two young girls are all alone at a deserted bus stop. While they wait for their absent father, a giant beast, with huge claws, comes upon them! Now, doesn't this sound like the set-up for a horror movie?Shops: Al's Toy Barn • Andy's Engine • Andy's Toy Box • Buzz's Star Command • Little Green Men Store Command • Slinky Dog's Gift Trolley • Toy Story Playland Boutique

This is one of the lovingly hand-crafted works of Hayao Miyazaki, often called the greatest of the Japanese animators, although his colleague at the Ghibli Studios, Isao Takahata, may be his equal. Remarkable that ''Totoro'' and Takahata's ''Grave of the Fireflies,'' now both in my Great Movies selection, were released on the same double bill in 1988. Miyazaki has not until very recently used computers to help animate his films; they are drawn a frame at a time, the classic way, with the master himself contributing tens of thousands of the frames.Totoro is one of the toys owned by Bonnie Anderson. He first appears when Bonnie is seen playing with her toys. He is shown to sleep with Bonnie and her other toys. Woody gives him a hug when he finds Andy's house.
