Description

The latest version of webOS built into the OLED55C7 only really delivers a couple of relatively minor enhancements over previous versions: support for ‘360’ VR clips navigated by waving LG’s magic remote control around; and the option to use the number buttons on the remote control to directly access favourite apps. But there’s no need to fix something that isn’t broken. Watch standard-def content and you’ll find the LG's performance little short of miraculous. Considering the TV is making up the majority of what you’re seeing, the level of detail, sharpness and clarity to the image is astounding. Only another LG OLED can match the C7 in this regard. Information of the number of pixels in a unit of length. With the decrease of the display size and the increase of its resolution, the pixel density increases. The operating humidity shows the acceptable level of humidity, in which the display will function flawlessly. It sets a lower and an upper humidity level for safe operation and is measured in percentage. Information about the brightness of the screen. It is measured in candela per square metre (cd/m²).

Dimensions, weight and color Information about the dimensions and the weight of the specific model with and without stand as well as the colors, in which it is offered to the market. Width

All 2017 OLED TVs from the major brands are going to be quite close in terms of picture performance, since they all use the same panel from LG Display – although one may do something better than others. Video processing on the Sony A1 OLED exhibits the least amount of posterisation and motion artefacts, while I expect Panasonic’s upcoming EZ952 and EZ1002 will deliver class-leading colour accuracy albeit without Dolby Vision. The Sony has the edge when it comes to detail and sharpness, too, but the LG C7 is no slouch - scenery being crisply, solidly defined, and skin blemishes and clothing fabrics realistically rendered.

LG says this C7 performs exactly like the B7, and we agree. We experience almost no differences in the picture quality, and those we do notice (a very slightly warmer image on the B7) are ever so slight. When it comes to motion performance, handling of 50Hz interlaced video (for example, the type of video used for Freeview or Freesat broadcasts) is still found wanting on the LG 55C7, and we noted rare but reproducible interlace artefacts such as combing in fast-action sports. For the best experience, it’s worthwhile sending a progressive video signal to the TV wherever possible. Automatic Brightness Limiter is a necessary evil on self-emissive displays such as CRT, plasma and OLED to prevent the power surge demanded by high-APL (Average Picture Level) video frames from overloading the pixels and components. The default picture preset is Eco, which doesn’t deliver the best picture for viewing in the home. Turn this off. The storage humidity shows the lower and upper humidity limit, which ensures safe storage of the display. Storing it outside these limits might damage the display.

Desktop monitors and smart TVs experience a latency/lag in visualizing the information. The time in milliseconds that the display needs to visualize the signal input. For instance, despite not having any visible speakers, the OLED55C7 supports Dolby Atmos. This only works with Atmos carried by Dolby Digital containers, though, not the Dolby True HD containers used on Blu-rays and Ultra HD Blu-rays (which greatly limits its usefulness) but it’s still of value for the hardcore audio enthusiasts among us.We also recommend dropping the Contrast setting by a few points to release more detail in whites, then dialling Dynamic Contrast up to Medium to add an extra layer of punch. Very low input lag. When in game mode the input lag is a solid 21 ms regardless of input resolution. This should be good enough for all but the most competitive gamers. This input lag is lower than any of LG's 2016 OLEDs like the B6, and is competitive with some of the best TVs from last year like the KS8000. Honestly, on this evidence there’s not a huge difference between ‘normal’ HDR and Dolby Vision, but you can rest easy knowing that when the Dolby Vision logo appears you’re seeing precisely the picture that the director intended. For a start, the colour temperature is far too blue, causing skin tones to look pasty and unnatural. Also, many undesirable video processing options are switched on, thus degrading the image fidelity. Graininess stems from excessive edge enhancement; smearing from noise reduction; and brightness fluctuations from dynamic contrast. WebOS (now in its 3.5 iteration) remains one of the nicest, snappiest and most useable TV interfaces out there, with Samsung’s own interface being the only one to run it close.

Approximate diagonal size of the display. If the manufacturer does not provide such information, the diagonal is calculated from the width and height of the screen. If you’ve been following the evolution of LG’s OLEDs over the years, the C7 is actually quite a bit different from its predecessor, the 2016 C6 series. Whereas the latter featured a curved screen and 3D support, the OLED55C7 and OLED65C7 have neither. Also, this year’s model provides four HDMI inputs (the C6 had three). Design

Verdict

The pixel pitch shows the distance from the centers of two neighboring pixels. In displays, which have a native resolution (the TFT ones, for example), the pixel pitch depends on the resolution and the size of the screen. Size class of the display as declared by the manufacturer. Often this is the rounded value of the actual size of the diagonal in inches.
