While the small boost in luminance range and consistently enriched colors are certainly welcome, though, and manage to deliver a visual experience that exceeds the one I had in a (non-Dolby Vision) cinema, it’s hardly a demo-grade showcase of what HDR can do. And with a noir narrative that trades in hints of everything from Chinatown to Angel Heart, reinterpreting the theme of what makes us human from the original, Blade Runner 2049 still has its own story to tell, and it's thought-provoking and brutal, tense and tender. years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. The various oranges and reds, mixed with yellows and glossy creams in the Las Vegas sequence are gorgeously rendered.

The benefits will only be major once broadcast TV moves up to 4K and once many new films will be produced in 4K. While I absolutely love the Dolby Vision application and wish it was available on this disc, I'm still very pleased with the included HDR10 application on the 4K Blu-ray. Conversely, Jared Leto's enigmatic Niander Wallace is a human who is completely void of all humanity to the point that he is more robotic and soulless than the Replicants he creates.

As usual, I wished they didn't compress the album as much - come on audio engineers, let's maybe aim for at least DR10 for these female "jazz" vocal albums please. Blaster shots bring expected bombast, particularly when Deckard cranks out his older hand cannon, and you'll wonder if the house is coming down when the assault team blasts through the wall. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. Complexions are healthy, varied and appear accurate, most erring to a warm, ruddy look while Hoek's Luv and Mackenzie Davis' Marionette veer to the paler side of the spectrum.

Those are solar panels (based on the Ivanpah Solar Power Plant) so presumably despite the consistently bleak overcast skies in the future, there are some blue sky days to harvest a few photons :-).With this rather dreary scene, with the "eye of faith" we can make a case for better color definition here and there with the 4K/UHD version; the difference isn't that impressive though, but we'll look at this again later. Like in the original Blade Runner, the city scenes are dark, tending to be rainy, and plain ol' murky. For this post, I want to show you what a " nearly 4K" movie presented on UHD Blu-Ray looks like resolution-wise. Blade Runner 2049 is an excellent film with stunning visuals that smartly expands upon the world and themes of the original while charting its own course with compelling new characters. After receiving some inquiries from fans, none of the home video releases replicate the Imax experience.
