Description

The chief appeal of 'Margery and Gladys' is the first-ever teaming of two actresses who have been beloved mainstays on Britain's television screens for many years. Britain has had a long history of mainly 'gentle' if somewhat bawdy comedies committed to celluloid. Believing that she has killed him, she panics and flees the house with Gladys, leaving behind her handbag. While she meets the locals and even starts a new romance, she has to learn to let the life she planned for give way to a love she never could have imagined, and finds this festive small town is hiding one big holiday secret. Keith and Brown work very well together and are a delight to watch as they get deeper and deeper into trouble, in turn bickering with and rescuing each other.

However, with money short and Gladys needing medication, the duo is forced into a surprisingly full-blown crime spree, proving more than a match for an unlikely pair of policemen, Detective Inspector Woolley and Detective Sergeant Stringer. This seems to be rarely shown on TV and as far as I'm aware, it's only ever been released commercially on an Australian region 4 DVD, and it's not easy to track down. Read all Haughty, recently-widowed Margery Heywood and her cleaner Gladys Gladwell go on the run after mistakenly believing that they have killed a teenage burglar, holding up a post office for Gladys' money, and giving petty crook Terry Mason a lift, they are pursued by the police.

As the women race across the countryside in a beat-up Fiesta, they each learn a whole lot about each other, even though Brown has been Keith's cleaning lady for decades. The pairing of Penelope Keith and June Brown seemed a bit strange to me, but as there seemed to be nothing else on that night, I watched this, and I'm glad I did.

Penelope is truly a British treasure and should be given Damehood for her contributions to television comedy.

Margery is devastated to learn of a twenty-year affair between her late husband and Gladys - and that her son knew of it. This film reminds me of a Simpsons episode, when Marge is at a book-club meeting with Helen Fielding.

After the start, Margery and Gladys confront in Margery's house and accidentally kill him, the plot follows a roller coaster of twists and turns to keep you guessing to the end. When a driven doctor doesn't get the prestigious position she planned for, she unexpectedly finds herself moving to a remote Alaskan town.
