Description

You won’t find a traditional Filmmaker mode, as TCL has its own Film mode (or Movie mode, depending on your region!) with the same intention of delivering the picture as originally intended, along with a Sport mode. Everything from the C735K and above also comes with Calman Ready 3D LUT colour calibration, along with Adaptive Picture and an ambient sensor. On the audio front, all but the cheapest LCDs come with Dolby Atmos as standard, with both the QLED and Mini LED models using an Onkyo sound system – with the C835 and C935 adding an extra channel or two, along with Adaptive Sound tech (the latter also found on the C735). The ‘Film’ image mode is also excellently calibrated. The gray scale has a little bit of red in excess, but that is hardly visible in practice. The color rendering is excellent. Considering the improvements in terms of contrast and dimming, these are very strong performances. The 65C835 will be ‘Calman Ready’ later this year so it can be calibrated automatically. For smart features and the main UI, TCL has turned to Android TV. The 65C825K currently runs Android 9.0, but will shift to 11.0 later in the year. European versions of the TV are already on to the Android 11.0 OS, and will upgrade to Google TV, but apparently that's not possible on this UK version due to localisation issues. Tone mapping of HDR10 content is very important to get the best out of every image. The TCL respects metadata and shows white detail up to 4,000 nits. For that you have to leave ‘Dynamic Tonemapping’ activated. With this, the TV neatly brings out all the white detail, so that every clear nuance remains visible. However, the image loses a little contrast, it seems to us that the tone mapping unnecessarily lifts the dark tones. TCL is aware of this issue and a software fix is in the works. You can also mitigate the problem a bit by activating “local contrast”. We had very few problems achieving a spectacular picture quality from the TCL C835, whether streaming 4K HDR from its own Google apps or playing via HDMI from an AppleTV 4K or UHD Blu-ray player.

Welcome to TCL Support - TV and Home Theaters - TCL UK

TCL’s televisions can differ by market, especially between UK/Europe and the models that appear in the US and Australia. This year we gather that the European and UK versions of the C835 will be technically identical (the previous C825 had a key difference in the UK), while Australia got to meet the new range first, with the C835 range officially available from 1 June 2022. you will need to watch content from directly in front of the TV where possible and keep this in mind regarding the seating positions The likes of the P638 may have similar alternatives or see tweaks to the features list in different regions. TCL 2022 TV line-up As well as the standard Dynamic Colour support, the P735 also adds a Wide Colour Gamut to the mix, with the usual HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision line-up. It has a 60Hz native display with de-judder and Motion Clarity Pro, along with Micro Dimming and wide viewing angle. There’s also Dolby Atmos support with its two down-firing, full-range, but non-Onkyo speakers.

Design, Connections and Control

There’s no true local dimming in the edge LED lighting system, despite the set carrying a Micro Dimming feature. This feature actually refers to the way the TV’s processor breaks down images into small areas so that it can more accurately determine how best to render the finished image.

Review: TCL 65C835 (C835-serie) LCD LED TV

The C635 also boasts an Onkyo sound system with 2.0 set-up using 2-way, down-firing speakers to enhance any Dolby Atmos output. There’s also hands-free support with voice controls and compatibility with the likes of TCL Home, Alexa and Chromecast (but no Apple AirPlay 2 or the likes of Matter and Miracast). Under the hood, the C835 still uses a quad-core ARM Cortex-A73 with 3GB RAM and Mali-G52 MP GPU that are sufficiently powerful for a smooth user experience. The C835 runs on Android 11 and is now also equipped with the Google TV interface. You can largely perform the installation using the Google Home app, which is more convenient than with the TV remote. However, during the last part of the installation, we notice that TCL asks you to log in with a TCL account. That in itself is not surprising, every manufacturer asks this, but optionally. At TCL this is now mandatory. As a user, you do not get any real benefit from this, the only difference is that you can place your device in the TCL Home app. While you do have to create an account again. So here’s a call to TCL to keep this optional. The LG QNED wasn’t worth the price. I wasn’t impressed with it overall, it had a horrible awkward stand attached to it, blotchy local dimming, and also came with coil whine too.

Select A Model

Calling in Onkyo to help out the 65C815K’s sound quality results in an impressive audio performance for such an affordable TV. The built-in Onkyo-designed speaker system is good enough to mean you can manage without adding a costly external audio solution. It is also the last of the models to share the same Google Smart TV platform in the UK as it does with its European counterparts, along with support for Apple HomeKit, Matter and Miracast (plus the more common TCL Home, Apple AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Google Assistant/Alexa companions. The smaller 43 and 50-inch models, along with the super-sized 85 and 98-inch are not yet prepped for the UK market but that could well change a little later down the line. But even if your size options are limited by your home region, the C735 still has the capacity to offer great value for money. Size / Model (UK) As well the FreeView Play perks of the Android Smart TV platform, the P735 also offers up TCL Home and Google Home, Google Duo and Google Assistant built-in, along with Alexa compatibility for hands-free voice control. There’s also support for Chromecast but no Apple AirPlay 2, while gamers can access Game Master with Stadia streaming titles and ALLM (down to 15ms), but not to the same 120Hz levels as the more expensive models. I should stress that these colour issues only crop up with bright HDR10 scenes/image areas. Dark HDR10 shots and scenes look pretty normal where colours are concerned – although, ultimately, this just makes the excesses with bright scenes all the more glaring.

faq - TCL

The C815 features both the major dynamic metadata HDR formats Dolby Vision and HDR10+ as well as normal HDR10 content. There is also an Onkyo 2.1 soundbar at the bottom of the screen and the TCL supports Dolby Atmos decoding with ARC support via HDMI 1 and the C815 also supports DTS audio. There are a number of unusual elements to the 65C815K’s reasonably attractive design. First, it features a very obvious, blue-tinted soundbar hanging from its bottom edge. This wears the branding of renowned Japanese audio brand Onkyo, raising hopes this might be the rarest of things: an affordable TV with a built-in sound system that doesn’t sound horrible. You could also take a similar approach to the Movie mode settings, if you don’t mind colours looking quite substantially flatter. The Google smarts also make setup an easy process, getting the TV on your home network and walking you through how to use the remote control for voice activation. What makes this TV stand out is the quality of its picture processing and delivery from first the Mini LED zones that create the light, then the quantum dot field that converts the blue light to white, through a new type of VA LCD panel for TCL that allows a wide viewing angle, and finally an antireflection coating that assists performance in a lit room. The 65C815K exhibits mixed fortunes with its contrast. Watching it in a dark room using its out-of-the-box presets, three contrast points immediately stood out: two good, one bad.

AVForums TCL 2022 4K TV line-up: LCD, QLED and Mini LED - AVForums

I could have gone for the C2 or the G2, but not worth it for me just for a little bit more brightness compared to my own Sony LED TV. And then having to baby the thing too, even though burn in risk is lessened these days compared to older models. The 65C815K’s pictures are… complicated. A unique mix of unexpected strengths and more predictable weaknesses. The TCL C935 is way better than the QNED, looks and sounds better, cheaper too. It gets super bright, not that I’d have it at max brightness, but it’s better to have it and not use it than need it and it’s not available. The local dimming works well, no complaints. And don’t have to worry about babying the thing, can leave it running no problems and also do as much gaming as necessary too without having to worry about burn in from HUD’s or anything like that. ALLM allows the video game console or PC graphics card to switch automatically the TV into game mode for a super fast TV game input lag below 6 ms ** As with several of the other manufacturers we’ve featured this year, there’s a clear progression in terms of both pricing and the ever-improving features list as you work your way from the cheapest TVs to the most expensive. This means you should be free to figure out your best option either by setting a budget and seeing what fits your limit, or by determining what features and specifications you need for your own viewing preferences and line-up your choices accordingly. There have been some discrepancies with TCL’s more formal naming of its products, with several variations on the usual system seen around the regions as the company continues to expand into European and American markets. For the most part, UK and European users should see a largely familiar set up, with the likes of the 75-inch P638 getting the full title of 75P638K here in the UK.
